Actor David Corenswet Chats ‘Bulking Up’ to Become Superman

If you were concerned that David Corenswet wasn’t buff enough to play Superman, the actor’s recent appearance on the Manly Things (Sort Of) podcast should put your mind at ease. The new Clark Kent said that at his max he had bulked up to 238 lbs and didn’t fit into any of his pants.

The initial transformation didn’t feel great according to the actor, because his body hadn’t adjusted to all the extra weight he had gained. He realized just how big he had gotten when he needed a 2XL sweatshirt during a table read for the film. He told the podcast audience, “That was at the peak of my bulk. And then I slowly lost weight before we started shooting. I started shooting at about 228, 230…I know I wanted this to be my excuse to see what it felt like to gain essentially as much weight as I could.”

While we’ve come to expect superman to look chiseled thanks to Henry Cavill, the role doesn’t necessarily call for that since the characters powers come from the yellow sun and not from his physical training. Comic artist and Image Comics co-founder Erik Larsen said in a recent post about Superman, “He should look relatively fit but he doesn’t have to look like a bodybuilder.”

Let’s just hope we never see Erik Larsen’s version of Superman. I don’t think the children would ever recover.
