Prime Video has officially canceled “The Wheel of Time” after three seasons, ending the adaptation of Robert Jordan’s beloved fantasy book series. The show, which debuted in 2021 with Rosamund Pike in a leading role, was based on Jordan’s extensive 14-book saga, later completed by Brandon Sanderson. Set in a richly detailed world filled with magic, prophecy, and epic battles, the series quickly became Prime Video’s most-watched premiere of 2021 and ranked among the platform’s top five debuts. Despite its creative success and a strong third season praised as the best yet, Prime Video decided not to renew the show due to financial reasons, primarily declining viewership and high production costs.
The third season, which concluded only last month, was generally met with critical acclaim, achieving an impressive 97% critic score and an 83% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, with many reviewers noting they felt that the show had finally reached its full potential, with richer characters and a more engaging pace that won over many fans who had been skeptical after the first two seasons. The season finale was crafted to provide some closure, but with so much of the original story left untold, fans expressed disappointment and frustration over the cancellation.
Despite the positive reviews, “The Wheel of Time” faced criticism from some fans and some critics who felt the adaptation was a poor representation of the source material. Early seasons sparked controversy due to significant changes from the books, alienating large swaths of the novels’ dedicated fanbase. While season three reportedly improved in storytelling and character development, the initial backlash and ongoing debates about the show’s faithfulness to the novels contributed to mixed reception among longtime readers.
Although “The Wheel of Time” performed well initially, its viewership declined over time, and the costs of production were simply too steep for Prime Video to justify any longer. While the TV series ends, the franchise lives on with other projects, including a AAA open-world role-playing game (RPG) videogame in the works at iwot Studios’ new games division., offering fans new ways to experience the world of “Wheel of Time”.
