What’s wrong with Andrew Garfield? The former Spider-Man actor is once again defending the idea of a gay Spider-Man, asking why Peter Parker “can’t be into boys.” The actor first raised the question more than a decade ago, and he now says his view has not changed. Garfield played Peter Parker in The Amazing Spider-Man and The Amazing Spider-Man 2, released in 2012 and 2014. He later returned as the character in Spider-Man: No Way Home in 2021. While promoting The Amazing Spider-Man 2 in 2013, Garfield said he had discussed changing Peter Parker’s love interest with producer Matt Tolmach. Because Mary Jane Watson is often called MJ, Garfield suggested the character could become a man. “I was kind of joking, but kind of not joking about MJ,” Garfield said at the time. “What if MJ is a dude? Why can’t we discover that Peter is exploring his sexuality? It’s hardly even groundbreaking. So why can’t he be gay? Why can’t he be into boys?” Garfield also suggested Michael B. Jordan for the role. He praised Jordan’s charisma and talent before joking that the story could include “interracial bisexuality.” Jordan was never cast as MJ, and Garfield’s idea did not become part of the film series....
