Avengers: Endgame Takes Back the Box Office Crown From Avatar

Avengers: Endgame is once again the highest-grossing movie in worldwide box office history, but the win came by a margin so small that another re-release could change the result again. Box Office Mojo lists Avengers: Endgame at $2.925 billion worldwide, narrowly ahead of James Cameron’s Avatar at $2.923 billion. The difference is about $1.8 million. For two movies that have each earned nearly $3 billion, that is barely more than a rounding error. The latest shift came after Disney and Marvel returned Avengers: Endgame to theaters on Sept. 25 as Avengers Endgame: Encore. The release added $126 million worldwide in two weekends, including $36.2 million in North America and $89.8 million overseas. That money was not just about nostalgia. Disney and Marvel used the re-release to build interest in Avengers: Doomsday, which is scheduled to open Dec. 18.
