Batman's New Butler Rightfully Captures The Internet's Attention

2 weeks ago 19

Leave it to DC Comics to stir the pot, and to the point where readers have no choice but to weigh in on social media — for better or for worse. That is admittedly part of the fun though, seeing one of the Big Two be entirely unafraid to go balls to the wall with their ideas because, after all, that energy did lead to the world being blessed with Absolute Batman and the entire Absolute Universe.

Of course, that's not the only Bruce Wayne ticket in town, as so eloquently pointed out by the creators of the twisted Bad Seeds series, and what Batman #12 has in store just went viral and sent fans of the Caped Crusader spiraling for answers. With Wayne's famed and longtime butler, Alfred Pennyworth, now deceased, his replacement — seemingly prearranged by Alfred — is a woman of unknown origin.

Beware the Bat .. and the Butler in Batman #12

Batman #12 variant Image: DC Comics

Per the solicitation: "Six of the world’s deadliest killers have descended on Gotham City at once—but who hired them, and who’s the target? Surely, it can’t be the Batman. …As the Caped Crusader races to uncover who set this deadly plan in motion, the late Alfred Pennyworth provides a gift from beyond the grave with the arrival of a brilliant new ally to the Bat-Family at a time when it needs one most."

Unlike in Absolute Batman, where Allred is a certified badass and MI6 special operative, the version in this series is/was much more of the traditional Pennyworth whose sole reason for living was to make sure Bruce Wayne was well-cared for following the murder of his parents as a child.

In that spirit, the posthumous gift to Batman has to mean Alfred believed the yet-to-be-named woman is more than capable of fulfilling the duties he once dedicated his life to. But not knowing who she is or what she is capable of, DC Comics' readers are a bit up in arms over the decision to make a woman Wayne's butler — given his history with the opposite sex.

A wealthy billionaire of the highest order, Bruce Wayne has been known to get the girl, regardless of who that girl might be.

Can Batman Behave Himself With a Woman Butler?

His past of romantic affairs — across several universes — includes Catwoman, Batgirl, Vesper Fairchild, Wonder Woman and even the daughter of one of his most violent enemies, Talia al Ghul, and that's just to name a few that have found themselves lying next to the Gotham's Dark Knight.

That said, it stands to reason readers would hold that concern high on their list of worries about Batman #12 and beyond.

"In about three years shes gonna have like seven issues sleeping with Vruce, and she'll have her own fanbase split on whether she should or should not be with [him]," wrote one Batman fan on X (formerly known as Twitter), and he wasn't alone in that thought. Another shared his view, panicked over the news: "Ain’t no way Alfred would have his replacement be a woman. He knows how Bruce is. If she didn’t come with a box of condoms she [wouldn’t be] sent by Alfred!"

Well, that's certainly colorful, but there is a credible theory that exists about who the woman is to Alfred, and that's the possibility that she is Daphne Pennyworth, Alfred's niece, though that wouldn't put the other concern to bed, pun intended. The only way to truly figure out what's going on, and what will happen next in the Batcave, is to grab Batman #12 when it drops on August 5.
