Earlier this year, Dark Horse Comics published Beyond Mortal, a cosmic horror take on superheroes by writer Cullen Bunn and artist Danny Luckert, in which a group of do-gooders and ne’er-do-wells teamed up to stop the reawakening of the elder gods. The creators are now teaming up again on a four-issue spin-off, titled Jumpscare. Lettered by Jim Campbell, the book introduces readers to the eponymous new vigilante, whose powers are inspired by her love of horror movies.
Strong, fast, and violent horror fan-turned-vigilante Jumpscare can conjure any gore-soaked weapon from any gore-soaked movie she’s watched. With this power, she’s become a force for good in Empire City, hacking her way through ne’er-do-wells and monsters alike. Now, her enemies want her dead, and a mobster-turned-monster, Grindhouse, will do whatever he can to bring her down.
Bunn declares, “Hands down, Jumpscare is some of the most fun I’ve ever had writing a comic. I absolutely love this character. She’s everything I love about horror movies, everything I love about superheroes, everything I love about comics, all rolled into one character. If you’re a horror fan, get ready to meet your new favorite superhero.”
The series marks Bunn’s latest collaboration with Luckert, following Regression (2017), The Red Mother (2020), Shock Shop (2022), and Beyond Mortal itself. The artist adds, “Jumpscare was just an absolute mayhem-fueled blast to draw. I can’t wait for people to see her in all her horror-fueled glory.”
Jumpscare #1 (of 4) will be released on February 26, and retail online and from your local comics shop for $3.99. Beyond Mortal, which was an original graphic novel, is available now from all good comic book retailers, and for more details on all of Bunn’s projects at Dark Horse — past, present, and future — simply head to the publisher’s official website, as well as his own webpage.
