Set across four major planetary systems, the story follows Amaterasu, the immortal emperor of the Grees Kingdom destined to rule the Joker System, and his bride Lachesis. The manga originally debuted in 1986 in Newtype magazine and was adapted into an anime film in 1989, directed by Kazuo Yamazaki.

In 2013, the lore was revised to align with Nagano’s 2012 film Gothicmade, renaming Mortar Headds (MH) to GothicMades (GTM) and Fatimas to Automatic Flowers (AF).

Nagano, a celebrated anime designer known for his work on Heavy Metal L-Gaim and Mobile Suit Z Gundam, has serialized The Five Star Stories for nearly four decades. The manga has over 8.5 million copies in print as of 2018.

An English version was previously published by Toyspress, a company co-founded by Nagano, covering Japanese Volumes 1–10 across 26 translated volumes. However, Volumes 11 and beyond have never been released in English—until now.
