The official solicit synopsis for Angel #1 from Dynamite Entertainment reads, "Once the terrifying vampire Angelus, Angel was cursed for his crimes with the return of his soul. That soul eventually led him to Sunnydale and a tragic star-crossed affair with Buffy, his vampire-slaying true love. Once the tragedy had run its course, Angel built himself a new life in Los Angeles as a supernatural detective, helping the helpless. But things don’t always go according to plan. And sometimes, you do have to go home again. This is that story."
News that Dynamite Entertainment was putting its own spin on the Buffyverse came in 2025. Previously, BOOM! Studios held the rights to the Buffy the Vampire Slayer franchise in comics, which were originally published under Dark Horse Comics, where the likes of the futuristic Fray spinoff series originated.
Buffy's Comics Sequel Will Be Written By One of Today's Strongest Comic Book Scribes
Image via The CWNot only will Dynamite Entertainment be introducing a whole new take on the Buffyverse, but both the upcoming Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel series will be written by the critically-acclaimed Kelly Thompson. Editor Nate Cosby previously said of the all-star scribe, "There was one name on my wish list of writers for Buffy: Kelly Thompson. There was one name on my wish list of writers for Angel: Kelly Thompson. Her passion for these characters is second-to-none. The interweaving story she’s crafted for both books is going to knock everyone's socks off."
Thompson herself recently discussed the upcoming Buffy the Vampire Slayer series, noting that "It's been a hard book to talk about. The new way I've decided to try to talk about it, while hiding the mysterious interior, is telling people to think of the first issues like an event book. Almost like we're starting with an event book with something that draws the cast of Buffy and Angel together for like a very personal emotional thing, and then we sort of spin out from there."
The iconic Angel made his franchise debut back in 1997 in "Welcome to the Hellmouth," the very first episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Portrayed by David Boreanaz, Angel was a centuries-old vampire who quickly became Buffy's hottest romantic interest, almost as quickly as he went from being a key villain to one of the franchise's most indelible heroes. In the years since, Angel has been revisited at numerous points, with the most recent being BOOM! Studios' 2021 comic book series.
Angel #1 from Dynamite Entertainment goes on sale on Aug. 19.
