Daredevil #501-507 (2009-2010)

Daredevil is now the boss of the Hand, and he’s having them kill corrupt judges and cops.

The Matt Murdock back-up cast are trying to figure out if their friend is behind the killings, with Foggy predictably blaming himself for the fact that his friend continues to be an unamanagable, arrogant asshat. Eventually, Foggy and Dakota BOTH get their licenses suspended, largely because of their relationship with Matt but also because of Norman Osborn. It’s really not worth getting into because, as I’m sure you’ve already predicted, they’ll get them all back.

Like the fact that he leads the Hand to Izo, they beat the crap out of him, and then Daredevil kills him as a “sacrifice” for his initiation into the band of assassins.

Only he’s not dead. He’s faking, and Daredevil knows it.

So DD is a double agent. No surprises there. He uses the Hand to beat up bad cops.

Meanwhile, Kingpin begsin shoring up the underworld back under his command.  This story takes place while Norman Osborn is still using The Hood to control New York’s criminals, and Kingpin exercises his control all while keeping it under the hood (ha-ha!), hidden.

Kingpin says that Daredevil is predictable and I have to agree.  All of the story beats in this tale so far are ones we’ve seen before.  And now it gets downright sily.

As the leader of the Hand, Daredevil orders the construction of “Shadowland,” while he sits on a throne underground.  Come on.  This is The Hand not Game of Thrones.

Shadowland is to be built on a site where over a hundred innocent people died. And Daredevil will use it to imprison all of Osborn’s corrupt cops. While it is built, Daredevil goes to Japan to meet with the other Hand leaders. This is a sub-arc within these issues that is all about the various Hand clans and is far from interesting.

Nothing is good here. When these issues end, Daredevil has failed to unite the Hand leaders and is heading back to the U.S. to complete construction of Shadowland.
