Jason is an award-winning journalist whose writing career dates back to when he developed the ability to use a crayon. He, most notably, worked previously as a "professional fan," as he likes to call it, at CinemaBlend, for which he wrote about anything and everything under the pop culture umbrella... especially Batman. His passion for the art of cinema began even earlier, stemming from repeat viewings of The Wizard of Oz.
This initially led him to pursue a career in filmmaking -- and even work briefly in the industry as an extra in the straight-to-video family film, Alice Upside Down -- before deciding that his talents would be better served discussing and showing appreciation for the various forms of entertainment he is passionate about.

The Absolute Universe has started to round out its version of the Bat-Family a bit with the introduction of the Absolute Robins in the most recent chapters of Absolute Batman. This, of course, begs the question: Where is Absolute Batgirl?

During a recent interview for the ComicPop Returns channel on YouTube, Scott Snyder confirmed that beloved Batgirl Cassandra Cain is coming to the Absolute Universe.

The acclaimed author of Absolute Batman and overseer of its corner of the DC Multiverse did not specify when the character would debut, but assures it will be soon. This implies that Cassandra could be rubbing elbows with Snyder's working-class Bruce Wayne later in 2026, or at least before the debut of Absolute Damian Wayne, whom the writer mentioned may have his time in the spotlight by 2027 in the same interview.

Snyder also mentions that it would help fans to be caught up on all the known titles of the Absolute Universe, which also includes Absolute Superman, Absolute Wonder Woman, and more, to prepare for the moment Cass enters the mix. That seems to imply that her debut will not take place in Absolute Batman, but that leaves the upcoming Absolute Catwoman, releasing June 10, open as a possibility, and one that would be quite fitting for the occasion.

Created by Kelley Puckett and Damion Scott, Cassandra Cain made her DC Comics debut in Batman #567 in 1999, initially depicted as a young woman trained to become Ra's al Ghul's bodyguard since birth. Soon after, the highly skilled martial artist would become the second character to fight alongside The Dark Knight as Batgirl and the first to star in her own self-titled ongoing series under the moniker.

Cassandra would later continue to fight crime under a rotation of different names, such as Kasumi, Black Bat, and Orphan, the last of which was the alias assumed by an alternate, non-speaking version of the character, named Cassandra Wu-San, on the animated series, Young Justice. Another alternate version of the character (considered one of the more disappointing DC character portrayals) took the place of her live-action debut in 2020's Birds of Prey, which depicts her as a neglected foster child roped into an adventure with Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn.

Two Batgirls Already Exist In The Absolute Universe

It is exciting to think about how Cassandra Cain has the potential to become the first official Absolute Batgirl. Of course, she is only the latest character who has assumed the moniker in the main timeline to become a part of the Absolute Universe.

The very first issue of Absolute Batman saw the introduction of Barbara Gordon, who followed in her father's footsteps to join the GCPD. She first crosses paths with Bruce Wayne's alter ego during one of the most iconic moments from Absolute Batman when he instructs her to keep the city hall doors closed while he lays waste to a gang called the Party Animals. She would later come to his aid against Absolute Poison Ivy.

Certainly not coming to Absolute Batman's aid anytime soon is Scott Snyder and artist Nick Dragotta's reimagining of the third woman to don the cowl, Stephanie Brown. Of course, instead of her career as Batgirl, the Absolute Universe honors Brown's brief tenure as Robin, as reflected by her inclusion in the Absolute Robins — alongside Dick Grayson, Jason Todd, Tim Drake, and Duke Thomas — who are formed to hunt The Dark Knight after he is framed for the murder of James Gordon.

One can only hope that Cassandra Cain will prove to be an ally to Batman once she emerges in Gotham City. Then again, it is never easy to anticipate what will happen in the Absolute Universe.

Cassandra Cain's Absolute Universe debut has not yet been announced.
