DC Comics Has Made Nightwing Forever Unclean

As we’ve witnessed the long death spiral of the mainstream American comic book industry, the prevailing narrative from old-school comic hopefuls has been to highlight the good and shame the bad.  They hope doing so would eventually shock Marvel and DC back into making enjoyable comics. But what has been transpiring in the comic industry the past decade is not run-of-the-mill comic drama.

This is not the forming of a new team or a controversial death meant to drum up lagging sales. Some things cannot be walked back. The argument is that people will eventually forget about this terrible era of comics when the big two return to classic form.

But you tell me. Can you forget seeing Nightwing like this?

Why Mainstream Comics Needs to Die

I almost feel like I should take up gambling because I am killing it in the prediction market. I said Indiegogo couldn’t be trusted, and then they banned Cecil’s Cash Grab 2 over politics. In that same Cecil article, I said Kickstarter would eventually return to their progressive roots and a day later they banned Jon Del Arroz’s The Emerald Array comic. And at the end of my recent April’s fool article, I made this joke about Nightwing’s butt.

Now DC has officially made the thirst a reality with Nothing Butt Nightwing. No, it is not still April.

There is a thin plot of Nightwing having to infiltrate the modeling industry to protect the models from a Poison Ivy protégé. Apologists will say it’s supposed to be funny and not taken seriously. Fine, but like I said, something’s can’t be unseen.

Even if the big two reform and start from zero, am I supposed to forget it was implied Wolverine was in a threesome with Jean and Scott? Or Iceman and Tim Drake were turned gay against years of canon? That Captain America was turned in a communist and Frank Castle a child psychopath? How Nightcrawler was ret-conned from a God fearing Catholic into a mutant born from two mothers who officiated over a gay wedding and started a cult?  The list of character-wrecking retcons goes on and on. 

And this is why I cannot support the modern comic industry. How can I buy the latest diamond in the rough story from a Marvel or DC when I know that purchase will go to fund something like this? There is no guarantee that these terrible ideas won’t eventually bleed into the few good stories left.

Just like you can’t comply your way out of tyranny, you can’t prop up an infected industry by cherry-picking the few good stories from the filth they regularly produce and pray they course correct. The big two seem to think they can experiment with anything and the customers will eventually return when they pivot to actual superhero stories again.

But something’s just can’t be unseen or forgotten.

And the scathing reviews on League of Comic Geeks bears that truth. The big two are losing fans who will never come back. Ever.

Youtuber MJTanner points out how this is a new low, and a clear double standard for comics, particularly DC Comics.
