Disney Officially Confirms A Gargoyles Sequel Releasing Sooner Than Fans Expect

Gargoyles is back and, yes, that is a fairly sizable smile creeping across your face. After all, why would anyone who followed the mid-1990s television series not be excited about this news, seeing as it's not often Disney grants a new run for Goliath and his friends?

The upcoming run has a chance to be special though, because it's being both overseen and written by Greg Weisman, the creator of Gargoyles. Weisman is teaming with Dynamite Entertainment to make it all happen, and he's just as, if not more so, excited as anyone.

"For me, this is a story thirty years in the making," he said, via BleedingCool.com. "One I've been longing to tell. So, longtime fans are seriously not going to want to miss this. At the same time, it's also a great place for new readers who know nothing about Gargoyles to jump aboard. We're making sure that everything you need to know is right there on the page. Your Gargoyles addiction begins here and now!"

Weisman's sentiments are echoed loudly, and proudly, by Nate Crosby, editor for the upcoming Gargoyles #1, set to hit local comic book shelves in August 2026.

Disney Is Finally Giving Gargoyles Its Due?

Stone by day, warriors by night, they were betrayed by the humans they had sworn to protect…frozen in stone by a magic spell for a thousand years. Fans of the original franchise sure hope so, because it can't be argued that the television series of yesteryear had a mountain of potential that was never truly explored at the time — making Gargoyles a cult classic that should have and could have been far more.

Gargoyles Is Back to Continue What Disney Should've Long Ago

Yes, Disney and Dynamite Entertainment are treating the upcoming comic series as a continuation of the criminally underrated TV series of the mid-1990s, with the new story picking up with events occurring in 1997.

"As each season of the original show progressed in relative real time, then despite being released way later, each comics phase picks up from that point and continues on, the Gargoyles saga has reached the pivotal era of 1997," the press release explained. "Fans are invited to flash back in time to the electrifying fun of the 1990s and the brilliant energy that cartoons of that era brought to the table, with Gargoyles first and foremost in its class.

It continued: "The titular Gargoyles only have eggs every 20 years, and the Manhattan Clan at the center of the saga have been keeping care of one playfully nicknamed 'Egwardo.' The only problem is — it's been stolen by arch-enemy Demona! As the Defenders of the Night try desperately to track down the egg, they're also faced with an awakened ancient, all-powerful evil with a vendetta against the entire world. All that and more can be expected each and every month in this new blockbuster series."
