Patrik Walker is an Emmy Award–winning writer who covers all things Comics & Superheroes. His work can also be found at the Dallas Cowboys, The Sporting News, and CBS Sports, among other outlets. One of the most respected names in his field, he is also a diehard enthusiast of all things comics, anime, gaming and movies — thriving in spaces where discussions involving those or similar topics reign supreme.

Everyone knows Victor Von Doom has an issue with vanity. After all, how can a man turned deity not have a god complex about every single thing that composes his being? That said, he takes few things more seriously than he does his beloved mask, one that Marvel Comics has seen fit to alter ahead of Marvel Studios' blockbuster Avengers: Doomsday.

At the hands of writer Chip Zdarsky and the artists involved with helping him bring Captain America #12 to life, Doom's usual carefully crafted mask is battered, broken and mended again in a way that gives full Dr. Frankenstein's monster vibes.

One look at the panels below puts it in plain view for all to see, and also hints at wha in the ... Hell ... is going on between Doom and Steve Rogers in Captain America #12 — something few could've anticipated ever seeing in Marvel Comics.

Doctor Doom, Captain America Going Through Hell Before Avengers: Doomsday

Per the official synopsis: "FROZEN...IN HELL! After S.H.I.E.L.D.'s campaign in Latveria meets a brutal and violent end, Captain America finds himself in the last place he expected to be, alongside the last person he expected to see again. Where has Victor Von Doom been since the FALL OF DOOM, and what does he want with Steve Rogers? Find out here as everything hurtles toward ARMAGEDDON!"

The result of Steve Rogers losing to the Red Hulk in Armageddon is that he's left in a coma, and while Tony Stark and Co. try desperately to revive him, unbeknownst to them, Captain America's soul is in Hell, and it's tethered to Doctor Doom's as a result of the latter's "silver cord".

That gives Doom the ability to resurrect himself through Rogers' body, or in a twist of fate, for Rogers to use the cord against Doom and fight his way out of Hell, which would also include having to potentially team up to take down the King of Hell, Mephisto. So, all told, it's no wonder Doom's mask was broken in the first place: he's going through Hell, literally, to try and come back to life in Captain America #12.

The MCU Mask for Doctor Doom Was Revealed Long Ago

It was the moment that froze the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe: Robert Downey Jr. threw off his green hood on July 27, 2024, during Marvel Studios' Hall H panel at San Diego Comic-Con, to reveal it would be him, the former Iron Man star, portraying Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars.

The mask was in his hand at the time, of course, and that wasn't the only time it would be shown. In the post-credits scene of 2025's The Fantastic Four: First Steps, Franklin Richards, now a toddler, was visited by Victor Von Doom. It has since been confirmed it was indeed Robert Downey Jr. in the scene, though his face was never shown, but Doom's mask was resting firmly to his left as he presumably spoke to the child of Sue Storm (Vanessa Kirby and Reed Richards a.k.a. Mister Fantastic (Pedro Pascal).

The mask was perfectly formed, and without so much as a scratch on it. But, much like in Captain America #12, Doom can plan on that changing when the Avengers, X-Men, Thunderbolts and Fantastic Four get their hands on him later this year. Everyone is in for the fight of their lives against Doom, but that means so is he.

Avengers: Doomsday will premiere in theaters worldwide on Dec. 18, 2026.
