Imagine entering a dark hall way, steam billowing along with frantic hazard lights. You’re a civilian being led through a compromised military base and a colonial marine has been tasked to lead your group to safety from the xenomorph terror. Close calls, simulated firefights, and alien scares all amplified by the rising tensions in your group. This was the Alien War experience as recalled in a new documentary, Beneath London: The Story of Alien War.
As an American and a fan of the Alien franchise, I wasn’t sure what this was about having only first learned of its existence this year. I was expecting just a bunch of dedicated cosplayers roleplaying their favorite franchise. Boy, was I mistaken. Led by original creators John Gorman and Gary Gillies, they went all in with a debut at the Arches Theatre in Glasgow in 1992, turning the venue into a fully interactive experience with excellently detailed costumes, practical effects, and surprisingly believable sets. Following its immediate success, they planted roots in the London Trocadero entertainment center near Piccadilly Circus in 1993. This documentary primarily focuses on the London experience era of the Alien War attraction.
I was really impressed by the production team’s attention to detail. They made sure every tour guide was well-prepared, and the audio and visuals were top-notch. The weapons looked awesome, and their special effects were especially eye-catching-they really brought those pulse rifles to life.
The cast and crew came from all kinds of backgrounds. Some even had regular day jobs and worked there part-time. It was clear they enjoyed what they were doing, and many of the actors spoke fondly about their experiences. They took pride in the attraction being completely practical, with no virtual elements-what you might call “Total Reality.” Alien War became so popular that even famous actors from the movie, like Sigourney Weaver and Lance Henriksen, showed up for the grand opening in London. That definitely gave the project even more credibility.
With all the excitement and popularity this exhibition had in the UK, I’m surprised theme park executives didn’t take notice. It would have made a fantastic and fun attraction. Their loss. Beneath London: The Story of Alien War really shows off the creativity and passion of the Alien fanbase. I’m glad that everyone who worked on it or got to experience it remembers it so fondly, and captured so much of it on film. I just wish I could have seen it for myself.
