A new controversy has hit the gaming world as Electronic Arts (EA), publisher of The Sims 4, attempted to ban a popular mod called “DEI Remover 1.0.0.” This mod, which allows players to change diverse characters—such as Black, trans, and gay non-playable characters (NPCs)—into white, cisgender, and straight versions, has sparked heated debate online. EA claims the mod violates its user agreement and has been working to scrub it from platforms, but the mod keeps reappearing on sites like Patreon and RPGHQ.
The Sims franchise owners EA, have say they’ve prided themselves on being “inclusive” since their launch in 2000, with The Sims 4 introducing expanded skin tones and more gender options in recent years. EA’s latest move, however, raises questions about how much control players should have over their own games. Many in the community believe that once they purchase a game, they should be free to modify it as they see fit, which seems to be a widespread sentiment among modding fans.
Others see the mod as “erasing important representation.” Content creator DanielleBuilds called the mod “a harmful agenda,” arguing that it undermines years of progress toward diversity in gaming. Still, for many, the heart of the issue is not just about representation, but about freedom. Gamers have long relied on mods to customize and improve their experiences, and many feel EA’s crackdown is an overreach.
“Just came across a Sims 4 mod that ‘removes DEI’ by forcing all pre-made Sims to be white, straight, thin, and even changing LGBTQ+ couples into siblings,” she wrote. “This isn’t just a mod. It’s intentionally erasing representation and pushing a harmful & disgusting agenda. The Sims has always been about creativity, diversity, and making space for everyone to tell their story. This completely goes against that.”
As the hunt continues, it’s clear that the tension between creative freedom and corporate control is far from settled. For now, the “DEI Remover” mod remains a flashpoint in the ongoing battle over who gets to decide what’s allowed in the world of gaming. Do you play The Sims and do you know where to find it?
