Marvel Comics is unveiling Eddie Brock's original sin, and it is absolutely heartbreaking.
A preview for Venom: Original Sin #1 from Marvel Comics drops readers into the middle of the not-so-distant past, specifically the 1980s, to a time when Eddie Brock was still a struggling journalist willing to cross almost any line to make a name for himself. In this particular instance, that line involves getting an early warning about the attack yet to be carried out by the villainous Jason Macendale Jr., better known as Jack O'Lantern. While Jack O'Lantern is out to cash in on an easy payday, Eddie is hoping that being the first to break the news about the villain's latest endeavor will be just the kind of story that will jump-start his entire career, assuming Spider-Man doesn't catch up to him first.

Venom: Original Sin is an entirely new kind of throwback series for Marvel Comics. Rather than simply revisiting an iconic era as seen in titles such as 2022's Venom: Lethal Protector by David Michelinie and Ivan Fiorelli, Venom: Original Sin shakes up the usual formula by introducing a version of Venom who has already lived through all of this before. As explained in Marvel Comics' official synopsis for the first issue of Venom: Original Sin, "Eddie Brock had become the King in Black, with power over all symbiote-kind through space and time! Could you blame him for wanting to use that power to go back to the time when Peter Parker wore the symbiote and fix a terrible moment in his past? Unfortunately, one small change can make ripples that can destroy a world... and Eddie needs to use his great power to put right what he put wrong."
Eddie Brock made his first appearance back in 1986's Web of Spider-Man #18 by David Michelinie and Marc Silvestri. After surviving a harsh and abusive childhood, Brock made his way through school and found work as a journalist for the Daily Globe. Although Brock was obviously talented in his own right, he struggled to make ends meet and was always on the hunt for any edge he could find. Eventually, Eddie published an interview with Emil Gregg, a man who claimed to be the infamous serial killer known as the Sin-Eater. When this information proved to be false, Eddie's name as a journalist was run through the mud, leading him to develop a profound hatred for the hero who had uncovered the truth - Spider-Man.
