Excalibur #8-10 (2005): Saturday Night Fever

So. Professor X, Magneto and Callisto are now allied and rebuilding Genosha into a mutant controlled island nation, creating its infrastructure, government, police force, etc. Members of these groups include guys like Dark Beast and prisoners who were in the Genoshan jail when the island was destroyed. And they have to work with Unus who is annoying brutish.

So, you can guess about how likely this is to succeed.

While rounding up Genoshan survivors who live in hiding on the island, Magneto finds out about the Avengers Disassembled storyline and manifests a new power: Teleportation.

I note that there is absolutely no reason to create a new power set. There are any number of ways Chris Claremont could have accomplished getting Scarlet Witch to the island (including that one of the mutants in the new Excalibur is named Hub and can teleport).

And another named Wicked who can send ghost-friends out to do her bidding.

Whatever. I guess Claremont thought Magneto wasn’t powerful enough yet.

He goes and retrieves Wanda and brings her back to the island so that Professor X can minister to her. That story will be the focus of the next arc.

While that’s going on, someone (unseen) nearly beats Dark Beast to death and does kill all the surviving Genoshan Magistrates. Callisto and Karima go looking for the killer, and Callisto says she likes how ridiculous she looks with her relatively new tentacle arms.

She reinforces her comfort about her new look when they find the killer and slay him.

The killer was Sugar Man–the X-universe’s version of MODOK (in that he has a giant head and smaller limbs).

Despite the fact that there are over a dozen new characters being introduced with very little development of time to “get to know them,” this was a solid story and I enjoyed it.
