Today's historic Star Trek #500 teased a new crossover event that will tie together IDW's two main ongoing Star Trek series, Star Trek and Star Trek: Defiant, in an altered reality story where Data's villainous "twin," Lore, rewrites all reality in what IDW is calling the Lore War, and in a CBR exclusive reveal, we have the cover for Star Trek: Lore War #1, plus information from the creators behind the event,
The creators are the writing teams for both Star Trek (Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing) and Star Trek: Defiant (Christoper Cantwell), along with artist Davide Tinto (certainly no stranger to licensed comic book work, having drawn Star Wars: Bounty Hunters for Marvel), and they are using the current Star Trek story arc to kick off this major event.
Where did the Lore War start?
In the main Star Trek series (following Captain Benjamin Sisko and the crew of the U.S.S. Theseus), Sikso and his crew recently encountered Lore, who had stolen the Bajoran Orb of Destruction, and believed that it had made him into a god...
Lore had previously been part of Worf's crew aboard the U.S.S. Defiant, who had split from Sikso during a confrontaiton with the Klingon emperor, Kahless (thus spinning off Star Trek: Defiant).
In today's Star Trek #500, Kelly, Lanzing, Cantwell, and Tinto told a story featuring Lore and his brother, Data, as we see that Lore plans on rewriting all reality in his name...
This, naturally, will lead into March 2025's Lore War crossover event.
What do the creators have to say about Star Trek: Lore War?
The above cover for the crossover's kickoff issue, an exclusive reveal here at CBR, is by Malachi Ward.
In an IDW press release, Cantwell noted, “Since the line’s inception, our grander story in both titles has dealt with STAR TREK’s concept of godlike beings and the rejection of those godlike beings — order and entropy as it exists throughout the four quadrants of the galaxy. Who pulls the strings and who dares to cut them? LORE WAR is quite literally the apotheosis of that shared theme, two years in the making.”
Lanzing explained, "This is it. The moment we've been building to since the Theseus left spacedock and the Defiant was stolen. The ultimate STAR TREK comics crossover event - as the heroes and villains of the galaxy must band together to defend its very existence."
Kelly added, "The Gods are dead, and only one mad android holds the reins of our universe. With absolute power comes absolute corruption... but does it come with absolute control?” Featuring the incredible art of Davide Tinto - a newcomer to the Trek world - we're not settling for anything less than the most impressive and world-ending STAR TREK event that comics can contain."
