Next month, Marvel Comics will release its new West Coast Avengers series, which will see Iron Man and War Machine assemble an all-new team. CBR has an exclusive first look at the debut issue and talks with series writer Gerry Duggan about the new team's formation, which includes redemption for the villainous Ultron.
West Coast Avengers was announced earlier this year at San Diego Comic-Con along with the news that the new team would include villains seeking a path to redemption. Their first case study is Ultron who seems to be changed for the better -- but other team members, Spider-Woman and Firestar, have their doubts. Last month, Marvel revealed that another unlikely hero would be on the West Coast Avengers' roster: Blue Bolt. CBR chatted with series writer Duggan about writing Ultron and Blue Bolt into the new team and the trials they will face on their path to redemption. West Coast Avengers #1 will go on sale Nov. 27.

CBR's preview pages of West Coast Avengers #1 show Ultron's steps towards redeeming his evil image as he rescues a family from danger and captures the ones responsible. Other pages appear to show some conflicting conversation between the West Coast Avengers team before Blue Bolt sends out an electrifying charge of energy to Ultron's horror.
Duggan Teases Surprises In Store for West Coast Avengers' New Team
CBR: Why did Ultron want to join the West Coast Avengers?
GERRY DUGGAN: This is a great question, and an answer will present over the course of the first arc. It really does work.
The solicitation for the series reveals that Spider-Woman and Firestar are skeptical about recruiting villains. What are their main concerns?
Ultron's past is an obvious concern, and Blue Bolt's future seems a mess. He's got all the makings of a great Spider-Man rogue -- not an Avenger. The concept of the team is going to put redemption and rehabilitation to the test. It's a fun bit of grit to have in this story.
Which characters are you having the most fun writing?
Firestar and Blue Bolt at the moment - but I love all the characters on this team. I told a great horror story for Ultron with Pepe back on Uncanny Avengers, and I think this one is very different but as exciting as merging Pym and Ultron.

I am personally very excited to see Blue Bolt. What makes him the "biggest jerk in the Marvel Universe"?
He's got defense mechanisms and high walls around himself. He's a villain, he's a prisoner at night, and he's trying to behave for the Avengers so he can shave time off his prison sentence. It's a tough balancing act, and he's got a hot mouth and hotter temper.
What are you the most excited for fans to see?
The last scene of issue one at the moment. And issue 4 is gonna make waves. Hope you have as much fun as we do
