Five Web Comics You Should Be Reading Right Now

If you haven’t heard of Webtoon, you really need to check it out. It’s a website (and mobile application) where writers and artists can post web comics daily, weekly, or monthly. These episodes are free to read. For some webtoons you can buy fast passes to access the next episodes quicker and show your support to the artists.

Webtoon is a huge website with a ridiculous number of web comics on it. You can subscribe to your favorites and interact with fans of the same content. How are you ever supposed to choose which one to start with? Well, I’ll tell you right now, whichever comic you pick will surely be good. I have yet to find one that I don’t like. Here are five ultra-unique and incredibly fun web comics, in no particular order.

Edith: A Web Comic About A Real Girl

Edith is by a user named Swansgarden and features beautiful art and the most realistic characters I’ve ever seen in a comic book, personality-wise. She struggles with making the correct decisions and often chooses the wrong path. She’s not the perfect girl we often see in the media. She has clear flaws. It has 39 episodes and is published every Monday. You’ll start reading Edith because the art style is captivating, but you’ll stay because the story hooks you in.

Edith is about a girl who doesn’t really know what she’s doing with her life. She’s struggling to find her place in the world. She has low standards and not much self-confidence. It’s not long before she finds herself caught between two men, both with their own flaws. One, sweet and seemingly taken, while the other is available and a little rude. The first relationship is seemingly perfect, the kind of man her Mom would want her to date, but she would never have passion with.

The second relationship, well, she probably wouldn’t bring him home to her parents. He’s bad for Edith, but she can’t seem to figure that out. The passion is all there. If you like realistic fiction, romance, and really cute boys (and girls), read Edith and groan just a little bit every time she makes a bad life choice.

The Devil Is A Handsome Man: No, Really

One of the newest additions to my list of favorite web comics, The Devil is a Handsome Man. This comic has 71 episodes, however, it’s currently on hiatus but will be returning soon. It was created by the user Hellothisisangle. The Devil is a Handsome Man has a very unique art style and uses only a few colors. Namely, pink, black, and white.

The comic features a woman named Xolia, who gets a job working for the Devil. In exchange for working for the Devil, she receives the one thing that she wants most, information. When Xolia realizes that the information she wanted is more complex than she realized it would be, the real story starts.

Xolia, the Devil, and many other amazing characters will make you want to continue reading this comic until three in the morning, only for you to realize you’ve burned through almost half the series in one night. It’s that good. The Devil is a Handsome Man is a combination of romance, mystery, and fantasy wrapped up in beautiful art and wonderful characters that you aren’t going to want to miss.

Aerial Magic: Witchy Wisteria

Aerial Magic is a web comic about a young witch, Wisteria, who’s just beginning to figure things out. She gets an apprenticeship and begins to study her craft. It’s by user Walkingnorth, and it’s two seasons long for a total of 51 episodes. Aerial Magic is currently on hiatus, but will be returning for season three.

Aerial Magic is charming. The art is whimsical and fun. Most episodes feature music that is just as beautiful as the story and the art combined. With each episode you’ll want to read more and more until it’s over. Before you know it, you’ll find yourself wrapped up in the world of magic. The thing that makes this story special is Wisteria. It’s established in the first few episodes that she doesn’t know how to read. A Witch that doesn’t know how to read? Instant interest on my part. There’s also a wise cracking crow sick kick, if you’re into that sort of thing (which I definitely am).

Miss Abbott And The Doctor: For Fan-Fiction Cliché Lovers

Miss Abbott and the Doctor is probably the most unique web comic I’ve found on Webtoons. Created by user Maripaz Villar, it’s 127 episodes and updates every Sunday. The comic is drawn in a sketchbook style. None of the images are ever colored in and the backgrounds are often sparse, but I find that this doesn’t make it any less beautiful. This is not fan-fction, but if you’re the kind of person who loves fan-fiction tropes (like enemies to lovers) you will definitely love this comic.

The characters are well written and incredibly charming. Miss Abbott is a joy to follow around and it’s fun to watch her embarrass herself around the Doctor, who generally has to clean up after her when she’s made a mess of things. In one of the first episodes, Miss Abbott goes past a dangerous point in town so she can sled down the perfect hill, and the Doctor finds her passed out in the snow. If you like smug characters who unknowingly flirt with each other, this is the read for you.

Lore Olympus: The Web Comic To End All Web Comics

If you close this article and only plan on reading one of these web comics, make it Lore Olympus. Lore Olympus is the pride and joy of the Webtoons app and a comic that everyone quickly fell in love with. Lore Olympus is by user Rachel Smythe and is 84 episodes long. It’s published every Sunday.

The story features Persephone as its main character. When she moved to Olympus for school, she took an internship in the underworld with, you guessed it, Hades. Prior to the internship, she found herself getting close to him, only to be thrown through the gates of hell and into his arms. Even though the two of them clearly take an interest in each other. There are many things that stand in their way. For example, Hades’ girlfriend, Minthe.

Not only is the art astonishing, and the story well written, it touches on important subjects like sexual assault. This amazing web comic is in development to become an animated series. If you like Greek myths and romance, definitely check this one out. You seriously won’t regret it.
