Japanese director Takashi Yamazaki is moving fast after the global success of Godzilla Minus One, and Hollywood is taking notice.
The 2023 film was made for about $10 million and pulled in more than $116 million worldwide. It also won the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects. Many fans now call it one of the best Godzilla films ever made. That kind of success tends to open doors, and Yamazaki is walking through them.
He is already set to release a sequel, Godzilla Minus Zero, in theaters this November. At the same time, he is developing a new original sci fi project called Nue. The film will be produced by Ridley Scott through Scott Free Productions and released by 20th Century Studios.
Details about Nue remain limited, but Yamazaki made it clear this is a personal project. In a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, he said, “Nue has been a lifelong dream of mine. I am honored to have the opportunity to make it happen with the creative brilliance of Ridley Scott and Scott Free and the fantastic team at 20th Century Studios. I will do my upmost to ensure this becomes a fantastic movie for all to see.”
Yamazaki has been working in film since the 1980s. He started in special effects before directing his first feature, Juvenile, in 2000. He has directed steadily since then, building a reputation for strong visuals without massive budgets.
Ridley Scott also praised the partnership. He said, “We’re delighted to be working with Takashi Yamazaki and his team on this magnificent original sci fi film for our partners at 20th Century Studios. We’ve long admired Takashi’s visionary and skillful story telling, exemplified by his superb production of Godzilla Minus One. We’re looking forward to helping him bring this major project to life to audiences around the world.”
Scott’s involvement adds weight to the project. He directed Alien for 20th Century Studios in 1979, a film that helped define modern sci fi. His return to work with the studio signals strong support behind Yamazaki’s vision.
Producers on Nue include Amie Horiuchi, Michael Pruss, Keiichiro Moriya, Go Abe, and Georgina Pope. The film is described as an original sci fi story, a genre where Yamazaki has already shown he can deliver strong results without runaway budgets.
With a proven hit behind him and a major Hollywood partner now on board, Yamazaki’s next move looks like one to watch. If Nue lands the way Godzilla Minus One did, it could mark a bigger shift in how studios bet on international talent.
