‘Golden Axe’ Trailer Mocks the Sword & Sorcery Genre

Golden Axe is coming to Paramount+ with a 10-episode animated series that turns Sega’s 1989 arcade classic into an adult action comedy. The series premieres September 16, and the first trailer shows that the barbarian heroes are bringing plenty of jokes along with their swords. The original game focused on Ax Battler, Tyris Flare, and Gilius Thunderhead as they battled through a fantasy world filled with monsters, magic, and giant bosses. The new show follows the three veteran warriors as they reunite to save Yuria from Death Adder, an enemy who refuses to stay dead. The trailer places Golden Axe in the same broad comedy lane as The Legend of Vox Machina and Disenchantment. That approach could work, but it seems a bit worn out by now. Hollywood adaptations have spent years treating male heroes as punchlines, especially when those characters come from fantasy, action, or comic book stories. That trend was very visible in Masters of the Universe, which appeared to view He-Man less as a powerful fantasy hero and more as a target for jokes.
