Sadly, our centennial celebration of beloved Mad genius Harvey Kurtzman is over. We know, we're crying in our furshlugginer beer, too.
But we're leaving in our archives a week's worth of fantastic material to peruse. Here's a quick rundown of the stories we ran last week, in case you might have missed something:
- Harvey Kurtzman’s Hey Look!: An appreciation and retrospective by Paul Karasik. A charming tribute to one of Kurtzman's most delightful works.
- ‘You’re only three-dimensional because of me!’: A celebration of Harvey Kurtzman’s sci-fi stories by Frank M. Young. An in-depth appreciation of Kurtzman's early EC stories.
- Harvey Kurtzman on the big comic cleanup of 1954 by Patrick Rosenkranz. A "lost" interview with Kurtzman that Rosenkranz did back in 1972.
- Nose to Nose With Reality: Harvey Kurtzman and Comics Journalism by Anya Davidson. Davidson dives deep to show how Kurtzman influenced cartoonists to try their hand at journalism and nonfiction.
- Learning From Kurtzman part 1: How Harvey helped create Punk magazine by Michael Dooley. Part one of an extensive look at Harvey's days as a teacher at the School of Visual Arts, featuring an extensive interview with John Holmstrom.
- Learning from Harvey Kurtzman, part 2: SVA and the Glocca Morra Pub by Michael Dooley. Bob Fingerman, Mark Newgarden and more talk about their experiences having Kurtzman as a teacher.
- Harvey Kurtzman: Seriously Funny by Drew Friedman. Friedman offers a warm, touching portrait of his relationship with Kurtzman.
A big thank you to all our contributors for helping us put this together, especially Paul Karasik for getting the ball rolling. You all made this special.
