The first teaser for Lanterns did not land well with a lot of fans. The visuals looked drab. The tone felt heavy. What should have felt like a big DC moment came off more like a slow, grounded crime show with a cynical edge.
The dynamic between the leads also raised concerns. The setup leaned hard into a buddy cop angle, but not in a fun way. It felt tense and uneven. John Stewart, played by Aaron Pierre, is shown pushing back on Hal Jordan, played by Kyle Chandler, and at times putting him down. For longtime fans, that is a very worrisom way to introduce one of DC’s most iconic heroes.
There’s also a local sheriff character who comes across as another modern girl-boss, telling the heroes how things are going to work. That tone, mixed with the grounded setting, gives the show a very different feel from what many expected out of a Green Lantern story.
But now, a new rumor has a lot of comic fans even more worried. The show is not opening with a big, colorful space war. Instead, Lanterns follows Hal Jordan and John Stewart as they investigate a murder in the American Midwest. That is a bold shift. The Green Lantern Corps are basically space cops. Not sure how a grounded mystery fits the idea.
Still, one line from the teaser raised eyebrows. Hal Jordan says he does not talk to the other Lanterns because they are all aliens. That does not line up with what fans already know. Guy Gardner, played by Nathan Fillion, exists in this universe since he appears in the trailer.
So what changed? That question is now at the center of a growing theory. No one has revealed who the murder victim is. That silence has led to heavy speculation online. At first, some believed Guy Gardner might be the one who dies. That would explain Hal’s isolation and why certain actors may not share scenes.
Now the rumor has taken an even sharper turn. Reports claim Hal Jordan himself may die in the very first episode of Lanterns. If true, it would be a shocking move and not the kind of surprise many longtime fans were hoping for. Some fans are pointing back to the teaser. Hal tells John, “The only way you’re gonna get this ring is over my dead body.” That line now feels different. What sounded like confidence could be setting up something much darker. In the comics, a Green Lantern ring chooses a new bearer when its current owner dies. That detail adds fuel to the theory. If Hal is gone early, John Stewart stepping in would follow the rules of the world.
The situation escalated after reported takedowns tied to spoiler discussions. Cosmic Book News says Warner Bros. Discovery filed DMCA notices over posts that described a “Season 1 Episode 1 Spoiler” for Lanterns. According to the outlet, the claims targeted text, not leaked footage.
Cosmic Book News rightly argues that describing a rumor should never trigger copyright action. Even so, multiple notices were filed, which only made fans more suspicious that something very big was being hidden. The same rumor claims the show includes two timelines, the Manhunters, and ends its premiere with Hal Jordan dead. Of course none of this has been confirmed by DC Studios or HBO, nor would it be even if true, but the reaction online to the rumor has been strong and mostly negative.
For many fans, Hal Jordan is not a side character. He is the Green Lantern. Killing him right away feels less like bold storytelling and, to some, more like a quick, DEI replacement. Others see it as a shift toward a cheaper long term lead with Aaron Pierre stepping forward as John Stewart.
There’s still a chance the show softens the blow. A second timeline could keep Hal in the story, and other theories suggest a larger arc involving Parallax, where Hal returns in a darker role before a possible redemption. But right now, that’s all speculation. What’s clear is that fans were already unsure about Lanterns and this rumor has only added fuel to their concerns.
Lanterns premieres August 16 on HBO and HBO Max. Until then, fans are watching closely and hoping this is not the direction DC takes.
