Hey Hollywood: Stop Lecturing About Politics and Entertain Us

1 week ago 5

Last week’s decisive and divisive U.S. presidential election has once again highlighted the celebrity fetish of playing in America’s political discourse. For the last couple of decades, whenever there’s a major political or social event going on, the “professional pretenders” seem to find a way to make it all about them. And while some may argue that celebrity endorsements can still influence public opinion, it may no longer be in the way they think. After dozens and dozens of celebrities and pop stars failed to secure the popular vote for Kamala Harris one week ago, it’s become a watershed moment for the industry and a warning for Hollywood to reconsider its involvement in politics altogether.

As the Critical Drinker sarcastically asks, “who better to guide the common working man on which candidate best represents their interests than a group of elite multi-millionaires living in a gold-plated echo chamber whose entire careers consist of saying words written by someone else?”

Celebrities, with their vast followings and platforms, often feel compelled to voice their political opinions. However, given their elite status and unique lifestyles, they’re not the most qualified to guide the average American on how to vote. There’s nothing wrong with being rich and successful, particularly if they’ve earned it, but one byproduct of being rich and famous is a certain level of detachment from the mundane reality of daily life.

In the aftermath of the presidential election, where Donald Trump won in a landslide, we saw numerous celebrities once again threatening to leave the U.S. if their preferred candidate lost. While these empty threats may have once carried weight, it’s clear the public has grown weary of this sort of celebrity political posturing.

Moreover, the decline in viewership for awards shows, which have increasingly become political soapboxes, is a tell-tale sign that the public is no longer interested in hearing celebrities’ opinions on politics. Am I the only one who can no longer watch any movie starring Robert DeNiro and just feel pity and loathing?

It’s time for celebrities to step back and reflect on their role in politics. While their endorsements may have once held sway, the public has grown tired of the disconnect between Hollywood and everyday Americans. It’s time for them to try a bit of humility and self-reflection, which are generally two qualities celebrities aren’t known for. Simply put, it’s time to shut up about politics if it’s not your area of expertise, particularly if you want to attract as large an audience for your movies and shows as possible. If they do, they might be able to earn back some of the respect and attention that they’ve deservedly lost this election cycle.

Hopefully, the eerie lack of comments from those same vocal celebrities post-election indicates a recognition of their diminished cultural relevance. Let’s hope this is a turning point, because if Hollywood celebrities ever want to reconnect with their audience, it’s going to be through genuine engagement, or simply focusing on their craft, not lecturing us about politics. By distancing themselves from political discourse, entertainers can focus on what they do best: entertaining audiences.

Hollywood Is DROWING In Their Own Tears

It’s time for Hollywood to “stay in their lane” and recognize that political endorsements are not their strong suit. By stepping back from the limelight and focusing on their craft, celebrities may once again find favor with the public and leave politics to the professionals.  Although for some, like Rob Reiner, Alec Baldwin, Jimmy Kimmel, Mark Hamill, or Stephen King for instance, have simply passed the point of no return and their TDS is terminal.
