SPOILERS AHEAD! The next Spider-Man film is much more than the solo outing it first appears to be. Spider-Man: Brand New Day was clearly built to connect Avengers: Doomsday, Avengers: Secret Wars, and the MCU’s mutant future in one swing. At the center of that setup was Sadie Sink’s Jean Grey, the MCU’s take on one of Marvel’s best-known X-Men. This version is much tougher and darker than past live-action versions, which has put some fans off, but that matters because the story appears to be pushing the idea that mutants need Professor X’s guidance, and cannot just rely on their powers. The film also seems to plant the early seeds of an MCU mutant crackdown. The Department of Damage Control is once again shown as a government force that does more than clean up wreckage, and the story ties that agency to detaining powered people in the name of safety. That angle could point to a bigger threat later on. If Damage Control keeps growing in power, it could become the MCU’s version of the Mutant Response Division, or even lead to Sentinel-style tech built from confiscated Stark drones and other weapons.
