James Gunn Confirms Krypto's Appearance in "Superman" with First Look at the Super Pet

Director James Gunn has confirmed that Krypto the Superdog will be appearing in "Superman" (2025) and shared a photo on his official Threads account of the superpowered canine and the Man of Steel (David Corenswet) side-by-side gazing down on planet Earth from outer space.
"Krypto arrives on screens in Superman this summer," shared Gunn. "Krypto was inspired by our dog Ozu, who we adopted shortly after I started writing Superman. Ozu, who came from a hoarding situation in a backyard with 60 other dogs & never knew human beings, was problematic to say the least. He immediately came in & destroyed our home, our shoes, our furniture - he even ate my laptop. It took a long time before he would even let us touch him. I remember thinking, 'Gosh, how difficult would life be if Ozu had superpowers?'- and thus Krypto came into the script & changed the shape of the story as Ozu was changing my life. What better time to debut the not-so-good-good-boy Krypto than #AdoptAShelterDog month. Btw, Ozu today, is, fairly often, a very good boy."
Krypto first appeared in a March, 1955 Superboy adventure story in "Adventure Comics #210" and was created by writer Otto Binder and artist Curt Swan. Originally intended as a one-off character, the dog attracted positive attention from the audience, and returned four issues later and became a regular member of Superboy's cast. Since his debut, Krypto has usually appeared as a white dog with a gold collar and red cape that matches Superman's.
"Superman" (formerly "Superman: Legacy") tells the story of Superman's journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas. He is the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned.
The film stars David Corenswet as Superman/Clark Kent, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Terence Rosemore as Otis, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner/Green Lantern, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, María Gabriela De Faría as The Engineer, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Beck Bennett as Steve Lombard, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, Pruitt Taylor Vince as Jonathan Kent, Neva Howell as Martha Kent, Mikaela Hoover as Cat Grant, and Christopher McDonald as Ron Troupe.
"Superman" will premiere in theaters on July 11th, 2025.
