James Gunn Reveals Henry Cavill Costume Destroyed During "Superman" Auditions

Posted on November 14, 2024 by Neil Cole

Director James Gunn has revealed that one of Henry Cavill's original Superman costumes was unfortunately destroyed during the audition process for the role of the Man of Steel in the 2025 "Superman" movie.

In an interview with the Hellish Podcast, British actor Tom Brittney ("Grantchester", "Invasion") stated that he had auditioned for the Superman role stating that, "It was actually Henry Cavill's Superman suit - it was his actual suit. It takes about half an hour to get into it - to get sewn into it. And yeah, I think I might have accidentally ripped it."

When asked via Instagram if this reveal was true, Gunn stated, "Yes. Tom [Brittney] messed it up and then [David] Corenswet came in an he was way too tall so it just got torn to shreds. BTW, Tom is truly one of my favorite actors. Incredibly talented guy." Gunn would also add that the costume was indeed an original worn by Cavill.

It has long been a common practice for producers and directors to use previously made costumes when auditioning for reboots or updates of film franchises, especially ones involving superheroes, to help see how an actor could potentially look in the role they are auditioning for. This was true for Cavill when he auditioned for the role of Superman in "Man of Steel" and wore an original suit that had previously been worn by Christopher Reeve. However, it is unknown which one of Cavill's numerous Superman costumes that was destroyed was used for the audition process as there were several versions created for "Man of Steel", "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice", and "Justice League".
