Low ‘Supergirl’ Box Office Forecast Could Mean Big Trouble for DCU

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is tracking for a $47 million to $65 million opening. That is a weak start for a superhero film with a reported $175 million production budget and about $75 million in marketing costs. A global total near $500 million would likely be needed to break even. An opening at the low end makes that goal unlikely.

The film also carries added pressure. It is meant to support the new DC Studios plan under James Gunn. The first release in this reboot was 2025’s Superman. That film earned about $619 million worldwide against a combined cost that may have topped $300 million. That result is not a clear win for a franchise relaunch, and it did not create strong cultural momentum.

Now Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow arrives as the next test. If it underperforms, it raises questions about the direction of DC Studios and Gunn’s long term role, especially with corporate changes expected as Paramount moves toward a merger tied to the studio.

Public response to the film has also been uneven. Lead actress Milly Alcock has drawn attention for comments in interviews that some viewers see as dismissive toward parts of the audience. That kind of friction can matter when a film depends on broad support to succeed.

Gunn’s creative choices have also faced scrutiny. Projects like Peacemaker built a niche audience but did not carry lasting mainstream impact. Upcoming titles such as Lanterns and a planned Clayface film suggest a strategy that leans on less proven characters rather than core icons.

The portrayal of Supergirl in this film has become another point of debate. Some fans question whether the tone matches what they expect from the character. Others argue that modern updates are necessary to keep the brand relevant.

Gunn found major success with Guardians of the Galaxy in 2014, where a lighter and more irreverent tone felt fresh. That same approach now appears less novel to some audiences. His 2021 take on The Suicide Squad also divided viewers despite strong critical support.

The box office performance of Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow will offer a clearer signal. If the film fails to meet expectations, it could force a reset in strategy for DC’s latest attempt to rebuild its film universe.
