Marvel Abandons ‘Blade’; Purges Reboot from MCU Release Calendar

1 month ago 5

Marvel Studios has removed Blade from its 2025 release schedule and delayed the Mahershala Ali-led reboot indefinitely. The Blade reboot was originally set to release on May 24, 2025. The decision to remove the film from the schedule has left fans wondering about the future of the project.

Blade, a vampire hunter, was last seen in the 1990s with Wesley Snipes as the titular character. Snipes also appeared in character in Deadpool & Wolverine, saying “there’s only one Blade. There’s only ever going to be one Blade.”

I mean…what exactly *was* Mahershala Ali’s reaction to Wesley Snipes appearing in “Deadpool & Wolverine” uttering the line “There’s only ever gonna be one Blade”? Wasn’t the planned movie dead-by-default by that point? https://t.co/zJtH2xFpl5

The reboot movie has been delayed for years already. It was first announced at the San Diego Comic-Con in 2019 when Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige introduced Mahershala Ali as the MCU’s Daywalker.  Despite years of delays, he still seemed committed to the project in early 2024.

“We are still committed to the movie and we’re so committed that we’re not going to make it until it’s right,” Feige said of Blade earlier this year. “Which has been frustrating for us and for some fans because it’s taken a while. But we have a new writer working on it now, I’ve read half of his new draft and it’s feeling good so far.”

“Wesley’s great, Wesley’s the greatest. Mahershala is the one who came in four years ago…five years ago…and said ‘I want to play [Blade]’ is what this movie’s about.” He also revealed at the time that the movie is going to be R-Rated.

The Blade script had already gone through multiple rewrites, with different storylines and time periods used in various drafts. The version originally planned to shoot last year “was set in the 1920s, according to sources, and featured Mia Goth as a vampire villain named Lilith who wanted the blood of Blade’s daughter.” Ali reportedly became “very frustrated” with the movie’s progress when Bassam Tariq vacated the director’s chair, prompting the production to come to a grinding halt, but this ended up being only the first in a series of setbacks.

The MCU Blade reboot film has vacated its November 7, 2025 release date, with no new date for the movie announced. Instead, Predator: Badlands will take Blade’s November 7, 2025 release date. With three Marvel movies now set for 2028, fans will have to be patient as they await updates on the upcoming projects. In the meantime, it’s probably best to abandon any hope for this reboot to ever see the light of day.
