Jason is an award-winning journalist whose writing career dates back to when he developed the ability to use a crayon. He, most notably, worked previously as a "professional fan," as he likes to call it, at CinemaBlend, for which he wrote about anything and everything under the pop culture umbrella... especially Batman. His passion for the art of cinema began even earlier, stemming from repeat viewings of The Wizard of Oz.
This initially led him to pursue a career in filmmaking -- and even work briefly in the industry as an extra in the straight-to-video family film, Alice Upside Down -- before deciding that his talents would be better served discussing and showing appreciation for the various forms of entertainment he is passionate about.
Until the release of The Fantastic Four: First Steps (and perhaps even still after for some), audiences accepted The Incredibles as the best film adaptation of the beloved comic book. Marvel appears to be acknowledging this opinion by bringing these two superhero families together in honor of Pixar.
Marvel is releasing a Fantastic Four #13 variant cover featuring the characters of The Incredibles as part of celebration of Pixar's 40th anniversary.
Image via Marvel ComicsThe image is an homage to the cover for Fantastic Four #159, a classic story from 1975 that sees the terrific team crossing paths with the Inhumans. The stars of The Incredibles are placed in similar positions as the eponymous heroes, with Bob “Mr. Incredible” Parr standing in the place of Ben “The Thing” Grimm, his daughter, Violet, standing where the similarly powered Sue “Invisible Woman” Richards is seen in the background, and the infantile Jack-Jack taking incendiary flight like Johnny “Human Torch” Storm, for instance.
To those unaware of the original Fantastic Four comic, the cover art may appear to be a simple recreation of the final act of Pixar’s Academy Award-winning 2004 animated favorite. The climax sees Craig T. Nelson’s once retired superhero Bob, teaming with his flexible wife, Helen (Holly Hunter), super-fast son Dash (Spencer Fox), and Violet (Sarah Vowell), along with Frozone (Samuel L. Jackson), to save the city from an octopus-like machine designed by Syndrome (Jason Lee).
Jack-Jack is not involved in this particular scene. However, the child is at least seen with his mask at the cliffhanger ending that sees the family preparing to take on a new villain named The Underminer (voiced by Pixar’s good luck charm John Ratzenberger), who also appears in this special cover.
The Incredibles-inspired Fantastic Four #13 variant cover is designed by David Baldéon, who has pencilled issues of DC comics like Blue Beetle and Robin and has previously worked with Marvel on titles like X-Men: Legacy and Nova. The comic itself comes from writer Ryan North and artist Andrea Sorrentino and sees Johnny Storm attempting to disguise himself as Ghost Rider.
