Jason is an award-winning journalist whose writing career dates back to when he developed the ability to use a crayon. He, most notably, worked previously as a "professional fan," as he likes to call it, at CinemaBlend, for which he wrote about anything and everything under the pop culture umbrella... especially Batman. His passion for the art of cinema began even earlier, stemming from repeat viewings of The Wizard of Oz.
This initially led him to pursue a career in filmmaking -- and even work briefly in the industry as an extra in the straight-to-video family film, Alice Upside Down -- before deciding that his talents would be better served discussing and showing appreciation for the various forms of entertainment he is passionate about.
It is no secret that horror comics have been on the rise as of late, and the industry's most prestigious publishers have been tackling the trend by releasing plenty of new freaky titles. However, Marvel appears to be taking things a step further with a new freaky universe.
Marvel Comics recently unveiled an ominous teaser for an upcoming imprint dubbed "Midnight."
The top of the promotional image bears white text, in a font calling an intense Stephen King novel to mind, on a black background that reads, "Marvel Comics presents a terrifying new universe," above the "Midnight" logo, the top of which is designed to resemble a clock striking 12. Underneath is a chilling tagline, typed in a grimly glowing gold, stating, "The light had its turn," above an eerie cloud of smoke surrounding the bottom.
The mysterious teaser, indeed, has left fans in a haze of mystery regarding what to expect from this new initiative. According to Marvel's official website, details involving which series will be featured in this new publishing initiative and names of the creators involved will be revealed the following week.
However, additional reports have suggested that Marvel's Midnight is being led by Eisner Award-nominated writer and artist Jonathan Hickman and Philip Kennedy Johnson of the current Infernal Hulk series fame. Benjamin Percy, known for crossing classic Marvel characters with the Predator and for darkening the Merc with the Mouth with Wade Wilson: Deadpool, has also teased his involvement by sharing the promo image on social media.
Midnight appears to be Marvel's choice as a replacement for the Ultimate Universe, which concluded in April with the release of the five-part Ultimate Endgame series. A scoop by Bleeding Cool also claims that the initiative is intended to rival two of the most popular and, especially, mature imprints from its top competitor: DC's recently revived Vertigo imprint and the smash-hit Absolute Universe, which has thrived since late 2024.
Yet, what appears to be the most crucial distinguishing detail is Marvel Midnight's supposed emphasis on the horror genre. Luckily, the publisher has plenty of great characters that would fit right in with that tone.
A Brief History of Marvel Horror
Image via Marvel ComicsAn entire corner of the Marvel Multiverse dedicated to leaving readers shaking in fear sounds like an exciting venture for fans who like their superheroes with a side of scares. Of course, there are plenty of great horror comics by Marvel already.
For instance, in the 1950s, the company ran Journey into Mystery, which was initially presented as a horror anthology comic book before serving as the publisher's introduction to its interpretation of Thor. In the 1970s, Marvel also had its own take on classic monsters with titles like Frankenstein and Werewolf By Night (which was adapted into a Disney+ special that also featured Man-Thing), but the most prominent was The Tomb of Dracula, which saw the debut of vampire hunter Blade in its tenth issue in 1973.
Speaking of the Daywalker, he would become a key member of a group of vigilantes who specialize in missions involving the magical and the macabre called the Midnight Sons, which also includes the likes of Ghost Rider, Moon Knight, and Doctor Strange, to name a few. Readers have been quick to make a connection between this team, whose Marvel Cinematic Universe debut has been long-desired, and the title of this new Marvel universe, suggesting that a return or a reboot is imminent.
Perhaps Marvel's Midnight could also showcase more monster hunts by the Bloodstone clan, or other spooky re-imaginings of iconic characters like "Franken-Castle," or maybe even a more fan-friendly attempt at a body horror Fantastic Four story, like what Josh Trank tried with his infamous 2015 movie. Better yet, should fans expect to see more Marvel Zombies in the Midnight imprint? Only time will tell.
Marvel's Midnight launches in Fall 2026.
