The following contains major spoilers for Civil War: Unmasked #1, on sale now from Marvel Comics.
Marvel's original Civil War has just been turned on its head, and things will never be the same because of it.
Civil War: Unmasked #1 (by Christos Gage, Edgar Salazar, Morry Hollowell, and VC's Travis Lanham) brings readers back to one of the most harrowing chapters in Marvel Comics history. Surprisingly, the issue doesn't just hone in on Tony Stark in the days before Marvel Comics' first Civil War, but on the impetus for him to so staunchly support the Superhuman Registration Act. As it turns out, Tony went all in on the legislation not just because he believed in it, but because the mutant hero Bishop showed him the horrifying future that would come to pass without it, one in which roving Sentinels hunt everyone and anyone with even an ounce of superhuman power.

The History of Marvel Comics' Civil War, Explained
Image via Marvel ComicsMarvel Comics first Civil War event took place back in 2006, and came about as a result of one of the gravest tragedies the Marvel Universe has ever seen. In the pages of Civil War #1 by Mark Millar and Steve McNiven, the New Warriors took on a band of villains led by Nitro, the latter of whom exploded with full force, wiping out every hero on the scene, not to mention hundreds of civilians, including dozens of young children at a school nearby.
In the months that followed, the superhuman population of Earth was divided between supporting and decrying the Superhuman Registration Act, which boiled over into a full-blown war between the two sides. Civil War also directly led to subsequent events such as Spider-Man's infamous Back in Black saga, whereas the concept in and of itself has been revisited at numerous points in comics, animated productions, and even the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Civil War: Unmasked is set to run for a total of five issues and will chart the entirety of the first Civil War event, all the way through its immediate aftermath. Series writer Christos Gage, who previously penned Iron Man/Captain America: Casualties of War in 2006, previously opened up about revisiting the event in Civil War: Unmasked, stating, "It's a thrill and an honor to revisit that troubled time with Civil War: Unmasked, in which I have the privilege of joining with brilliant artist Edgar Salazar and trend-setting original Civil War colorist Morry Hollowell to reveal never-before-told stories from that milestone event!”
