Marvel Revives ‘Nova’ Project With ‘Loki’ Creator Attached

Marvel Studios may finally be pushing its long-delayed Nova project forward. The Disney+ series has been stuck in development for years, but a new update from the Writers Guild of America West suggests real progress is happening.

The WGAW listing for writer Michael Waldron now includes Nova as an upcoming drama series, with work scheduled from 2026 to 2027. That signals active development after a long period of uncertainty inside Marvel’s television slate.

The project dates back to 2022, when Moon Knight writer Sabir Pirzada was first attached. Momentum slowed after that. In 2024, Ed Bernero stepped in as writer and showrunner, but by 2025 the series was reportedly paused as Marvel reassessed its streaming strategy.

Waldron’s involvement could change the trajectory. He is one of Marvel’s most trusted writers. He created Loki and wrote Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. He is also co-writing Avengers: Doomsday. Outside Marvel, Waldron worked on Rick and Morty and created Heels and Chad Powers. His background in science fiction and character-driven stories makes him a strong fit for Nova.

In Marvel Comics, Nova is usually Richard Rider, a teenager from New York who gains powers from a dying member of the Nova Corps. He receives enhanced strength, flight, and access to a powerful energy source tied to the Nova Force.

The Nova Corps serves as an intergalactic police force, similar in concept to DC’s Green Lantern Corps. The group protects the Nova Empire and has already appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Guardians of the Galaxy. However, Avengers: Infinity War revealed that Thanos wiped them out, leaving the door open for a rebuild led by Rider as Nova Prime.

Marvel has not announced casting for the role, and no release date is locked. Still, Waldron’s attachment suggests the studio is moving past its earlier delays. In July 2024, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige said the series was three or four years away. If production ramps up soon, that timeline could still hold.
