The following contains spoilers for Infinity Watch #5, on sale May 28 from Marvel Comics.
Marvel's most powerful comic book superheroes just learned the painful limitations of their own medium.
A preview for Infinity Watch #5 from Marvel Comics finds the eponymous team of Infinity Stone-wielding heroes once again staring down the threat of the dimensionally displaced Avery Zavala. While the heroes of Infinity Watch are more than capable of holding their own on any ordinary battlefield, all Avery has to do to gain the upper hand is bend the bounds of that very same battlefield around them. And, while Ripley Ryan/Star is capable of breaking through to the other side of the fourth wall before anyone loses their lives, that doesn't make the experience any less painful.

The latest in a long line of former protectors of the fabled Infinity Stones, the heroes of the latest iteration of Infinity Watch are both a familiar bunch and a completely new phenomenon unto themselves. Whereas their predecessors simply safeguarded individual Infinity Stones, the current Infinity Watch is composed of individuals who serve as living hosts to the now sentient Infinity Stones. As such, the powers that the likes of Star, Multitude, and Phil Coulson wield are far beyond anything their predecessors ever knew, not to mention far more dangerous.
When Infinity Watch began, the eponymous team was just beginning to find its footing and figure out exactly what its greater mission was supposed to be. Before they could get very far in that regard, they were approached by Avery Zavala, a traveler from another reality that suffered a grim end. When Avery failed to convince the members of Infinity Watch to help him recreate his universe from the ground up, he turned on them in an instant, brutally cutting down almost each and every single hero before stealing the power of their Infinity Stones for himself.

The most devastating death in Marvel's new Ultimate Universe has officially been undone, and the ramifications will run especially deep.
Thankfully, not every member of Infinity Watch lost their life to Avery's blade, as Star was able to warp reality just enough to escape such a gruesome end. Star also took it upon herself to warp the entire primary Marvel Universe, reimagining it as a toned-down version of its former self where she could enjoy at least a momentary reprieve from her new enemy's onslaught. While Avery ultimately caught up to Star, she was able to buy herself enough time to undo most of the death and destruction he had wrought, giving herself and her teammates a second chance to fight back against their interdimensional assailant.
