Marvel’s New Hawkeye is a ‘Non-Binary, Two-Spirit Native American’

Marvel Comics has introduced a new version of the classic superhero Hawkeye, but this time, the character has been reimagined. In a new storyline, Clint Barton from Earth-6160 declines to take up his familiar role as Hawkeye. Instead, a new character named Charli Ramsey, a Native American who identifies as non-binary and proudly uses “they/them” pronouns, steps in as the Avengers’ archer. How minority, female who identifies as non-binary? That’s a lot of diversity boxes to tick.

Series writer Deniz Camp revealed this on social media, saying they worked hard to make this new Hawkeye “cool, different, and yet undeniably Hawkeye.” Charli Ramsey’s non-binary identity, along with the use of they/them pronouns, represents Marvel’s latest woke effort to diversify its characters.

Issue 5 of Ultimates is out today! First appearance of our Hawkeye; we worked hard to make them cool, different, and yet undeniably “Hawkeye”.

So, yes, Charli’s pronouns are they/them. I didn’t want to make a big deal of it, because it’s not in the book itself, and because I don’t think Charli would make a big deal out of it in that context. But we’ll make this explicit when it’s natural to the narrative.

Of course our readers know that this is not the first time Marvel has clumsily incorporated LGBTQ+ themes into its stories. In recent years, the franchise has increasingly reimagined characters, with changes in sexuality and gender identity. In the 2021 Disney+ series Hawkeye, Marvel introduced the character Wendy Conrad as a lesbian. Marvel has also made Thor’s brother, Loki, bisexual and included a gay superhero in Eternals. And that’s just their movies and tv shows.

Marvel Comics reworked their classic villain M.O.D.O.K. to resemble Donald Trump. It hired radical leftist writer Ta-Nehisi Coates to create a Captain America series, and he made the villain, Red Skull, a bizarro version of writer Jordan Peterson. They even created a woke pair of sibling heroes named “Snowflake” and “Safespace,” of which one was nonbinary. Reaction to a preview video announcing those characters was so bad. Marvel declined to release any Snowflake and Safespace comics.

Marvel’s approach reflects a broader trend in the entertainment industry to include more diverse characters and storylines, which has sparked a variety of reactions from fans. While a minority of readers have embraced the inclusivity, others either just tolerate it, or even see it as a radical departure from the original character designs. Despite negative reviews, Marvel continues to wokify its roster, hoping to resonate with a more modern audience.

Not to be outdone, DC Comics has made Superman’s son bisexual along with Batman’s sidekick, Robin. Wonder Woman and Supergirl are also gay.

As the debate around character transformations grows, Marvel remains committed to evolving its universe. With this new non-binary Hawkeye, it’s clear that the company aims to stay at the forefront of representation in pop culture, even as the comicbook industry continues to spiral into bankruptcy and irrelevancy.
