Mighty Avengers #1-6 (2007-2008)

3 days ago 7

Tony Stark forms a new Avengers team comprised of heroes who registered with the government during Civil War. Issue #1 sets the tone: Action-packed.

We start with some flashbacks about how Tony recruited the members, including asking Carol Danvers to be the leader instead of former team leader Wasp.

The team takes down some Mole Man monsters and appears to win, but after apprehending Mr. Elder, Iron Man’s suddenly twists, distorts, and then turns into a metal, naked figure that looks an awful lot like Wasp.

That’s some Frank Cho art there, that is.

Turns out, Mole Man had attacked the surface world in retaliation for someone wrecking his underground home and murdering many of his moloids. The wrecker-in-question was Ultron.

Ares has no compunction about hitting a woman and launches in to attack.

But Ultron beats them all down.

Janet has to bring in Hank Pym to take down the sentient robot that he created, which means she has to interrupt his tryst with Tigra.

Dude. That bottle. Tell me that’s not a stand-in for a penis.

As part of the fun, Hank puts on his classic Ant-Man costume for the first time in decades.

Tony Stark’s fine in the end, of course. His extremis armor protected him while Ultron turned him into a chick.

This is a fairly mindless story–especially given that it’s written by Bendis, who is usually quite cerebral–but that doesn’t mean it’s bad. On the contrary, it’s a blast.
