New Concept Art Reveals Alternate Design of Fifth-Dimensional Imp Featured in "Superman" (2025)

Newly released concept art offers a detailed look at the finalized design of the Fifth-Dimensional Imp featured in "Superman" (2025). Created by Legacy Effects artist Adam Milicevic, the artwork provides a clear view of the creative development behind one of the film's most unusual interdimensional creatures.

Milicevic's final design depicts the Imp as a translucent, floating orb with subtle inner illumination and soft, tendril-like extensions. Reflecting on the process behind the design, Milicevic stated, "Final Concept and Design for the Inter-dimensional Imp as seen in Superman. Done for Legacy Effects. Lots of iterations on this jelly boi." His comments underscore the extensive experimentation that influenced the creature's distinctive appearance.

In the months following the film's release, director James Gunn addressed speculation that the Imp may have been intended as a reimagining of Mister Mxyzptlk, one of Superman's oldest and most recognizable foes. Gunn clarified the distinction, stating, "Oh, no. He's just a stupid basic imp. He's nowhere near as powerful as Mister Mxyzptlk."

Introduced in Superman #30 in 1944, Mister Mxyzptlk is a long-standing antagonist from the Fifth Dimension known for his reality-bending abilities, mischievous personality, and his unique vulnerability: speaking or writing his name backward forces him to return to his home dimension. Over decades of comics, animated series, and television adaptations, he has become one of Superman's most enduring and unpredictable adversaries. Gunn's clarification confirms that the creature in the film was conceived as an entirely separate entity, designed specifically for the story rather than adapted from this historic character.

The release of this concept art offers a clearer perspective on the craftsmanship and imaginative detail that contributed to Superman's broader visual identity, highlighting the collaborative work behind bringing its interdimensional elements to life.
