Comic book readers are invited to explore a brand-new science fiction story by Jonathan Hickman.

In an official press release from Dark Horse Comics, "Go back to the beginnings of the Three Worlds / Three Moons sci-fi universe with the new one-shot, Shift, from Jonathan Hickman and Mike del Mundo. Written by Hickman, illustrated by del Mundo, and lettered by Rus Wooton, this one-shot explores a lost age of magic and wonder set ages before Foundations. The 64-page issue will be presented in a prestige, magazine-sized format and will be available in September 2026."

Dark Horse Comics provided an official solicit for those who are a bit more curious about Shift, offering some explanation as to what fans can expect when the comic book finally releases. "Set generations before the current science cycle, in a time when magic is at its peak and Kaoso is thriving, Syg the White Stag eschews the wishes of his family and the will of the Academy by hitching a ride on a Vojoganto to the center of the universe—Akva—to understand the cause behind what he believes to be the inevitable collapse of the universe as he knows it. Accompanied by his lifelong friend, an accused heretic named Markus, the two set out to unlock the secrets of life and stop the world's collapse. Will Syg and Markus be able to complete their mission, or will their time be cut short by the next cosmic shift?"

In today's era, with independently published comics becoming increasingly mainstream, Hickman's Shift is no exception. Shift originally found its beginnings on a smaller platform before being shared with Dark Horse Comics. The vast and infinite accessibility of comics due to online publishing, Shift's inspiration was first available to be read on a subscription-based digital platform. "Initially published on Substack, Three Worlds / Three Moons is the brainchild of the award-winning and best-selling team of Hickman (X-Men, East of West), del Mundo (Spawn: Unwanted Violence, Avengers), Huddleston (Decorum, The Strain), and Spencer (Amazing Spider-Man, Morning Glories), spanning comics, graphic novels, and more. Dark Horse Comics will publish all of these stories, available in comic shops and bookstores beginning July 2026."

Looking outside of Shift's release from Dark Horse Comics, Foundations will also be coming to print, according to a formal announcement from the publisher itself. "The Foundations one-shot, written by Hickman and Spencer, illustrated by del Mundo and Huddleston, and lettered by Rus Wooton, will be the first title published in the line and will set the scene for the sprawling sci-fi world," Dark Horse Comics said.

“We are incredibly excited for the opportunity to partner with Dark Horse so that comic stores and comic fans can get to experience this project that has been years in the making," creator Jonathan Hickman said upon the announcement's confirmation that more Three Worlds / Three Moons would be printed in Summer 2026.

The official summary of Foundations reads, "Across a distant solar system and countless millennia-long cycles, a war has been fought between the forces of magic and science, and order and chaos. When astronaut and explorer Tajo Vallar undertakes a doomed expedition to a dormant moon full of mysteries, the conflict begins anew, and it will be more dangerous than ever before!"

Shift releases in comic book shops in September 2026; the Foundations one-shot is set to drop on July 8.
