NYCC ’24: A delicious and crunchy breakfast with CRUNCHYROLL

1 month ago 6

New York Comic Con has arrived and The Beat attended a breakfast hosted by Crunchyroll to kick things off. Held at Legacy Records, a beautiful restaurant with an inviting vintage aesthetic, breakfast included the most flavorful and flaky croissant ever tasted, a pear and cheese danish, and a variety of coffees, mimosas, parfaits, and fruit salads.

But the real draw was Crunchyroll’s presentation and accompanying merch display, which was as impressive as the pastries.

Executive vice president of emerging business Terry Li and on-screen talent producer Tim Lyu kicked things off with a short video showcasing short clips from various animes. In bold lettering, the video proclaimed that anime is here to stay. Li and Lyu then showed off a graph with global spending in the anime industry from 2018 to 2025. It showed a projected growth of $60 billion by 2030 with an annual anime spending of $84 to $1k.

In addition to the graph, Li and Lyu also emphasized that anime is booming and some of that can be attributed to prominent celebrity fans such as Megan Thee Stallion, Noah Lyles, Logic, and Michael B. Jordan.

Anime is now as diverse as its fans. Crunchyroll demographics data reveals 52 percent of its audience to be male, 46 percent female, and 0.9 percent non-binary. Approximately 70 percent of anime fans are between the ages of 13 and 34.

As the presentation and discussion neared its end, Li and Lyu said subtitled and dubbed anime content is now available in over 12 languages and accessible in over 200 countries through Crunchyroll. It’s truly become a global pop culture phenomenon.

To wrap things up, they showcased New York Comic Con-exclusive merchandise available through the Crunchyroll store for fans, collectors, and archivists alike. Attendees were then offered goodie bags with random Crunchyroll loot.

There was even a brief appearance of a Banana Cat mascot, who passed through the restaurant. The event was less than a block away from the Javits Center so heading to the venue to start the first day at NYCC was fairly convenient.
