At the “Marvel Comics: Next Big Thing” panel on Thursday at New York Comic Con, the publisher revealed a new series joining its Ultimate Universe. In January, Ultimate Wolverine will join the lineup, written by Chris Condon and drawn by Alessandro Cappuccio. The series will stay true to Wolverine’s origins, with a Winter Soldier twist.
The Maker, AKA the secret creator of the Ultimate Universe, controls this version of Logan, who’s been mindwiped to be used as an assassin. He’s of course still the best there is at what he does, but he has no say in who’s on the receiving end of his particular skills. Per the announcement, Maker’s council members Magik, Colossus, and Omega Red deploy the Winter Soldier—in this case, Logan—to maintain control of their corner of the Ultimate Universe.
“When Wil Moss called me and asked me if I wanted to take on this title, I jumped at the chance and immediately had an idea of what to do with it,” said Condon. “I’m bringing my essence of storytelling from That Texas Blood to the Marvel Universe with Wolverine, looking back at what came before and bringing us something new.
“You might notice that there’s a Red Star on his costume and you might wonder why,” he continued. “If you look at that mask, there’s a muzzle on him, and that’s because he’s wild.”

Ultimate Wolverine will appear in Ultimate Universe: One Year In #1, a one-shot that concludes the first year of the storyline and establishes what’s to come in 2025. Then he’ll return in Ultimate Wolverine #1 on January 15. Pre-orders for both issues are available now.
