Annie Banks is a Rotten Tomatoes–approved critic, and CBR editor and writer specializing in anime, comics, and superheroes. Her work has also appeared in Collider and The Mary Sue, where she covered pop culture, fandoms, and entertainment trends. A lifelong fan whose love for storytelling began with Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back, Annie blends critical insight with genuine passion for geek culture, from sci-fi to K-pop.

An unbelievable crossover has now become canon. Jujutsu Kaisen has now infiltrated Marvel Comics' multiverse in a subtle-yet-exciting reveal.

A panel in Storm: Earth's Mightiest Mutants #4 clearly depicts Ryomen Sukuna's terror during the Shibuya Incident Arc featured as a narrative peak in Gege Akutami's Jujutsu Kaisen series. The Shibuya Incident Arc was notorious for its unforgiving brutality, costing the lives of fan-favorite Jujutsu Sorcerers such as Kento Nanami while protecting Tokyo against the ruthlessness of Cursed Spirits and Sukuna's reign.

The location tagging for the Jujutsu Kaisen reference reads: "Shibuya, Tokyo, Japan. The multiverse cluster of magic and death." While Marvel Comics acknowledges just one cataclysmic event, it's not impossible that the comic book publishing giant can continue to find greater ways to incorporate the wickedly popular dark shōnen in future canonical contexts. Jujutsu Kaisen: Modulo has promised that the universe will see no true end any time soon, providing plenty of opportunity for Marvel Comics to revisit — or revive — beloved characters through a fresh perspective. DC Comics has taken the liberty of welcoming Jujutsu Kaisen into its comic universe as pink-haired protagonist Yuji Itadori was spotted in Nightwing #113.

With manga and comics being so closely related in terms of their physicality and degrees of storytelling, it's not a total surprise that an overlap between one of the biggest series of today's manga industry would find its way to continue to influence Western comics. Prominent names in comics, such as Jim Lee and Robert Kirkman, have already noted the direct correlation between manga and American comics; variant covers of Absolute Batman have honored iconic titles such as Chainsaw Man and Akira with incredible glory.

Jujutsu Kaisen Has Broken Ground For Battle Shōnen

Following its 2018 release, Jujutsu Kaisen became a powerhouse. Despite aligning fairly close with the comfort and familiarity of shōnen manga, the series — with a name that literally translates to 'Sorcery Fight' — exploded into the entertainment scene. MAPPA helmed the anime, which transformed the printed material into a thrilling, richly emotional, and gorgeous work of art that bloodied screens unforgettably.

Jujutsu Kaisen's heartiest, most rich elements aren't just found in its visual appeal, but in its emotional weight as well. Suffering, grief, and the burden of having savior complexes allow both the anime and the manga to dive deep into ethical dilemmas that ask audiences to re-evaluate how they understand power and corruption. There are also the more tenderhearted and intimate moments that allow Jujutsu Kaisen to defy expectations of a battle shōnen completely. Saturo Gojo and Suguru Geto's complex relationship and tortured bond permit the series to step away from only being known for its brilliant fight scenes by creating layered, nuanced characters who remain cherished even after their inevitable demise.

Jujutsu Kaisen subverts the notions of shōnen through its writing of female characters, pairing relatability with femme fierceness in a truly refreshing manner. Nobara Kugisaki refused to bend to societal expectations, and Maki Zenin has weaponized her revenge to define her own fate. As Jujutsu Kaisen secures its global prominence, it continues to challenge how personal, anime and manga can truly feel.

Storm: Earth's Mightiest Mutants #4 can be read wherever comic books are sold.
