Oshi no Ko, the story about the idol industry that took the world by storm when the anime adaptation premiered, will be doing its final bow very soon. Announced on its X account, Oshi no Ko revealed the manga would end in four chapters. The series is currently on hiatus, but when it returns on October 24, it will release the last four chapters on a weekly basis, culminating in the last chapter, Chapter 166, releasing on November 14.
Aka Akasaka (Kaguya-sama: Love Is War) wrote Oshi no Ko during a time when the entertainment industry was rife with complaints about the culture. He partnered up with Mengo Yokoyari as the illustrator and Oshi no Ko debuted in Weekly Young Jump in April 2020. The manga is available to read in English on Manga Plus and has been licensed for a print release by Yen Press. Oshi no Ko has sold over 18 million copies as of July 2024.
The manga was green-lit for an anime adaptation with Doga Kobo helming the production. The anime saw much success. Season 1 premiered on HIDIVE and was reportedly the most successful premiere in the streaming service’s history. Yoasobi‘s opening theme song “Idol” hit 100 million views on Spotify and Youtube two weeks after the anime’s premiere.
Oshi no Ko will also inspire a live-action film and television series with the former distributed by Toei while Amazon Prime Video has the streaming rights for the television series. The show will launch on November 28 and will have eight episodes.
Oshi no Ko follows gynecologist Gorou Amamiya who meets his favorite idol, Ai, in the most unexpected way: Ai has come to his hospital to deliver her twin babies in secret. Unfortunately, on the night of the delivery, Gorou is murdered and when he wakes up, he’s reincarnated as Ai’s son who she names Aqua. What’s more, Aqua’s twin sister, Ruby, was actually once a patient of Gorou named Sarina Tendōji who also harbored the same admiration and love for Ai. The three live happily as a family for a few years before Ai is killed by the same fan who killed Gorou. Consumed by rage and a thirst for revenge, Aqua dives deeper into the entertainment industry in order to find out who the murderer was as well as protect his sister Ruby’s dreams.
Even though the manga will be bidding farewell, Oshi no Ko fans can still be entertained by watching the anime which just started airing its second season. A third season has already been confirmed.
