‘Pleasantville’ 4K Cut Moment Revives the Censorship Debate

Fans of Pleasantville recently discovered that Shout! Factory’s new 4K Blu-ray release removed a key line from Reese Witherspoon’s character, Jennifer. The edit has drawn attention because the missing dialogue is still included in older versions of the 1998 film and in the version streaming on YouTube Movies, and seems like an integral character moment for the film. The cut appears during Jennifer’s final talk with her twin brother David, played by Tobey Maguire. Jennifer explains why she plans to remain in Pleasantville and attend a nearby college. In earlier versions, she tells David, “I did the slut thing, David. It got kind of old.” The new disc moves from her mention of an admissions letter to David’s next line, removing her reflection on her former promiscuity, which some argue is integral to understanding the character and what she’s reflecting on. It’s her actions that brought about the changes that took place in Pleasantville, and many were dismayed it had been cut. Shout!
