Jason is an award-winning journalist whose writing career dates back to when he developed the ability to use a crayon. He, most notably, worked previously as a "professional fan," as he likes to call it, at CinemaBlend, for which he wrote about anything and everything under the pop culture umbrella... especially Batman. His passion for the art of cinema began even earlier, stemming from repeat viewings of The Wizard of Oz.
This initially led him to pursue a career in filmmaking -- and even work briefly in the industry as an extra in the straight-to-video family film, Alice Upside Down -- before deciding that his talents would be better served discussing and showing appreciation for the various forms of entertainment he is passionate about.

Most Power Rangers stories tend to follow a simple, foolproof formula in which a big, bad, otherworldly evil threatens humanity and the young warriors step in to take it out. Unless their initiative counts as vigilantism, never in a million years could one imagine the team indulging in any activity remotely considered criminal.

However, it appears that is about to change as a new comic book series is putting the Rangers on a daring and dangerous type of mission that has rarely ever been deemed heroic. Surely, it must be for a good cause, though...

Power Rangers Unlimited #3 Cooks Up A Heist Thriller

The upcoming third issue of Power Rangers Unlimited sees a group of Rangers embarking on an assignment unlike anything these heroes have ever participated in before. It appears that they have an elaborate snatch-and-grab job in development.

The official solicitation provides a few enticing details promising that this story is very "Power Rangers meets Ocean's Eleven." The description even includes a funny reference to the George Clooney-led acclaimed heist movie from 2001, which itself was a remake of a 1960s comedy starring the Rat Pack.

"It’s the heist of the century...and it's gonna be Serpenterrific! Who doesn’t love a good heist? Kwan's Seven are on the scene to pull off a high-tech swindle! Can they fly under the radar at this glitzy event hosted by the galaxy’s most evil? Join Conner McKnight, Will Aston, Sarah Thompson, and more of your favorite Power Rangers as they go up against Broodwing to pull off an intergalactic mission that’ll knock your socks off!"

The synopsis is admittedly light on specific details regarding the mechanics of the heist, primarily covering the location (a social gathering of wrongdoers from across the galaxy) and the target of the assignment (the bat-like extraterrestrial enemy known as Broodwing). However, there is no indication of the score, which is a thief's term for the object that the crew intends to take, save that it might be something of a "high-tech" nature.

Of course, part of the fun of a caper like this is learning about the mechanics of the plan as the story unfolds. At least the Power Rangers Unlimited #3 solicitation mentions a few key members of "Kwan's Seven," namely Red Dino Ranger Conner McKnight, Black Overdrive Ranger Will Aston, and Pink Ninja Steel Ranger Sarah Thompson.

Power Rangers Unlimited Brings Multiple Generations Together

It is exciting to see a Power Rangers story that veers off course from the traditional order of things after more than three decades since the multimedia franchise launched. It is also bewildering to consider how many iterations of these young, powerful warriors have been introduced in all that time, and it brings to mind the intriguing idea of seeing them cross paths.

That, indeed, is the intention of Power Rangers Unlimited, which has been described by its creators as an ongoing series that "literally takes 30+ years of Power Rangers toys and dumps them all out on the table." Initially published as a series of one-shot specials in continuity with BOOM! Studios' Mighty Morphin Power Rangers run, the comic features multiple Rangers from across the "Morphin Grid," such as Yellow Zeo Ranger Tanya Sloan and Red Turbo Ranger T.J. Johnson, for instance, working together.

The mastermind overseeing the operation is the mysterious Operator, who is revealed to be the original Blue Ranger, Billy Cranston. Serving as the active mission leader is his former teammate from the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers era, Yellow Ranger Trini Kwan.

Power Rangers Unlimited is written by Kenny Porter and Joey Esposito and illustrated by Alessio Zonno. Following its Free Comic Book Day exclusive prequel issue, Power Rangers Unlimited #0, the series launched on July 1 to an overwhelmingly positive reception from fans.
