Quantum Leap Writers Return: Major Comeback Comes With a Twist

1989's Quantum Leap is a staple for science fiction fans, being remembered as an all-time great series for fans of time travel stories, and its continuation in 2022 was met with excitement from all corners of the fandom. Unfortunately, the show wrapped up in 2024 — still managing to deliver a satisfying ending despite cancellation.

However, that ending may not be as finite as it seems at first glance. GUNGNIR Publishing has recently announced at least two new Quantum Leap stories hitting the graphic novel medium — and they're bringing along some veterans of the series.

Quantum Leap Writers Have Signed A Two-Book Deal With GUNGNIR Publishing

GUNGNIR Books recently announced that it has signed a two-book deal with 2022's Quantum Leap writers Benjamin Raab and Deric A. Hughes for brand-new graphic novel adventures. The prolific writing team — known for their work on Quantum Leap, Arrow and The Flash — looks to be diving headfirst into a sprawling new story with the aid of international comic book artist Gianenrico Bonacorsi.

“Benjamin and Deric have a rare gift for pairing extraordinary world-building with emotionally compelling characters,” Founder and Publisher of GUNGNIR Matthew Medney said. “Before the World Crumbles is a testament to that talent, following an unlikely yet relatable heroine as she faces the most difficult choice she will ever make.”

Quantum Leap Returns With Norse Mythology And Hordes Of Zombies

Quantum Leap's next story will be titled Before the World Crumbles and is set to offer a whole new take on the series. Following Dr. Tyra Sorenson — the world's foremost expert on Norse culture, whose expertise will become humanity's last hope when hordes of Viking zombies begin rising from the dead all around the world. This is the first signaling of Ragnarök — the legendary Twilight of the Gods.

The only issue here is that Tyra has no interest in saving the world. As a mother mourning the untimely death of her son, all she cares about is honoring his memory — but when Odin presents her with a chance to bring him back to life, Tyra finds her inspiration. She agrees to put aside her grief and accompany a NATO Special Operations Force on a supernatural quest fraught with duplicitous Asgardian gods and savage mythological monsters to find an ancient artifact with the power to save either the world or her son. Which will she choose?

When speaking about Before the World Crumbles, Raab and Hughes gave a bit of insight into what Quantum Leap fans could expect. Said Raab & Hughes, “When it comes to epic, genre-bending storytelling, the fine folks at GUNGNIR Books are like the ancient Vikings of yore, exploring uncharted territory in search of comic book glory. We’re beyond excited to partner with Matt, Steve and the whole GUNGNIR family to embark on a creative journey that feels like a match made in Valhalla.”

Quantum Leap has long held a spot in any sci-fi fan's heart, and it's great to see new stories continuing the show's legacy. For as different as Before the World Crumbles seems, bringing in the writers of the 2022 reboot is sure to deliver an adventure well worth reading. Viking zombies alone should get any Quantum Leap fan's blood pumping.
