The world of Spider-Man: Reign, first seen in the 2007 original series by Kaare Andrews, takes place in one of the darkest visions of the future for the Marvel Universe. In this reality, New York City's own Mayor Waters keeps the population in line with his militant police force known as The Reign. In a bid to safeguard his empire from any outside threats, Waters enacted the use of the WEBB system, which effectively cut the entirety of NYC off from the rest of the world at the expense of countless lives. Fortunately, an elder Peter Parker returned to take down Mayor Waters and his Reign, as well as the Sinner Six who were called into action against their old enemy.

Spider-Man: Reign 2 brings readers back to the reality of Earth-70237 for a time-bending journey across whole new corners of the series' treacherous landscape. Although Peter Parker already faced off against the Venom symbiote and Eddie Brock for what seemed like the final time in the 2007 series, Spider-Man: Reign 2 has introduced a new Venom. This time around, the Venom symbiote is bonded to none other than Mary Jane Watson, who has been twisted into holding a deep-seated hatred for Spider-Man due to Venom's malicious influence.

The Gwen Stacy of the primary Marvel Universe is infamous for being one of the most influential and tragic figures not just in the pages of Marvel Comics, but in pop culture as a whole. An early love interest of Peter Parker, Gwen lost her life during a battle between Spider-Man and the Green Goblin in the pages of 1973's Amazing Spider-Man #121 by Gerry Conway and Gil Kane. After being kidnapped by the Green Goblin, Gwen was thrown from the Brooklyn Bridge. Although Spider-Man was able to catch Gwen with his webs, the sudden impact of stopping midair in total freefall ultimately broke her neck. Since then, Gwen has lived on in a variety of storylines and Multiversal variants, including the fan-favorite Ghost-Spider, better known as Spider-Gwen.
