That’s All Folks! Director Says ‘Venom’ Was Only Meant to Be a Trilogy

Venom the Last Dance hit theaters last weekend and it’s been an interesting reaction with mixed results. Many reviews are all calling it fun, but not a good movie. And U.S. fans aren’t rushing to the theaters as the film opened for $51 million. That could be due to the World Series kicking off between two teams in large markets, New York and Los Angeles, and playing on Friday and Saturday nights. But the overseas audiences were showing up with the global total being $175 million, something Sony will be very happy with.

This is the third and final film in the Tom Hardy led trilogy and according to writer/director Kelly Marcel, this has always been the plan. “We knew it would be three. We knew it was a trilogy and we knew it would end like this from the beginning. Sony asked me to [direct] and I was like, ‘Oh, okay then.’ I have been on the first two movies, and it felt like we knew that this was the third and final one, and knew that this one was going to be both a blast but emotional as well.”

Marcel was the writer on the first two Venom films, and she talked about her collaboration with Hardy. “I feel like Tom and I, having spent the better part of seven years working on this, really wanted to bring this one home from inception to the finish line. It felt like the right time to step up and the right movie to do it with.”

Good to see them wrapping up the most successful corner of their Spider-Man-Less Spider-Verse films.
