The Legend of Korra Sequel Confirmed — Release May Happen Sooner Than Fans Expected

The Legend of Korra is getting a thrilling new sequel story, and the first look just dropped. Dark Horse, in collaboration with Avatar Studios, will release Kya and the Secret of the Sand this July.

The comic book publisher shared a first look at the graphic novel on social media. "Young Kya makes her way for the first time in the world outside Republic City..." the post reads, with a video attached showing the trade paperback book's cover art and even some interior pages. The story looks at Aang and Katara's daughter, Kya, as she goes on a journey of self-discovery, all while uncovering secrets at the edges of the Earth Kingdom. Kya and the Secret of the Sand goes on sale July 28, 2026.

The Sequel Story Was Written in Collaboration with Korra's Co-Creators

Dark Horse's full solicit for Kya and the Secret of the Sand shows just where the story takes place in the Avatar timeline, with her sharing a flashback story while on an adventure with Korra. "While helping Korra recover in the Southern Water Tribe, Kya shares a story from her youth of a time when she was lost and disconnected from herself, far from home in the Si Wong Desert..."

"Young and untested, Kya leaves her family to seek her purpose in the wider world. Hoping to test herself and help struggling communities, she heads to the Si Wong Desert, where scarce resources and fractured communities are making the fringes of the Earth Kingdom increasingly unstable," the solicit continues.

Kya will find her resolve tested as her journey goes deeper. "Kya, arriving in the community of Liyuan to teach healing and help the struggling community defend itself from bandits, finds that the wounds left from decades of conflict run deep, and may be harder to heal than she first thought."

Kya and the Secret of the Sand is written by Eisner-nominated graphic novelist Kiku Hughes (Displacement) with art by Alexandria Monik (The Legend of Korra: Patterns in Time, Legend of Korra: Mystery of Penquan Island). It was created in collaboration with Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra co-creators, Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko.

Kya and the Secret of the Sand Marks Korra's Fourth Graphic Novel Sequel

Since the end of The Legend of Korra, several comic book stories have continued the story, all set after the events of the show and giving fans a deeper look at what happens next in the beloved fantasy world. The first of these was Turf Wars, released in 2017-2018, which saw Korra dealing with the aftermath of Kuvira's attack on Republic City.

Ruins of the Empire followed in 2019, showing Avatar Korra and her allies dealing with the fallout of Kuvira's surrender in the Earth Kingdom. Most recently, The Mystery of Penquan Island arrived in 2025, with Mako and Bolin heading off towards the island in the Fire Nation to investigate a mystery.

The Legend of Korra: Kya and the Secret of the Sand goes on sale July 28 from Dark Horse Comics.
