Street Sharks Took a Bite Out of '90s Animation

The Cartoon Street Sharks

Created by David Siegel and Joe Galliani of Mr. Joe's Really Big Productions, Street Sharks was developed by Phil Harnage, Douglas Booth, and Martha Moran for DIC Productions. The series featured a team of four adolescent anthropomorphic sharks, formerly the ordinary sons of esteemed geneticist Doctor Robert Bolton. They were transformed against their will by their father's deranged assistant, Doctor Luther Paradigm. After being transformed into Ripster, Jab, Streex, and Big Slammu, better known as the eponymous Street Sharks, the teens use their powers to rescue their friend, fight the forces of evil, and search for their missing father.

Street Sharks ran for a total of 40 episodes over three seasons from 1994 up through 1997. The series was a hit with its target audience, although it never garnered the same popularity as its obvious competition in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise. That being said, Street Sharks had a far greater impact on pop culture than even its longtime fans might know, having led to the release of countless pieces of tie-in merchandise, a short-lived Archie Comics series that wrapped up in 1996, and an animated spinoff that has been relegated to the realm of obscurity for decades.

IDW Publishing is about to take fans on a whole new journey through the cosmos with the release of Star Trek: Voyager - Homecoming.

That spinoff was 1997's Extreme Dinosaurs, which featured the anthropomorphic dinosaur heroes known as the Dino Vengers. They were introduced in the third season of Street Sharks (renamed Dino Vengers Featuring the Street Sharks). Although the Extreme Dinosaurs spinoff only lasted a single season compared to Street Sharks' three, it still managed to outpace the original in terms of overall episode count by running for 52 episodes in its short time on air.

Unlike Street Sharks, the world of Extreme Dinosaurs has only been revisited in fan-made material since the series came to an end, and has never been the subject of any attempts at a remake or reboot in its own right.
